  1. Jim there's a bte plant sales in Leicester somewhere, I deal with they're leyland branch for bits for my kubotas and find them sound. Mite be worth talking to? Ste
  2. What machines have you seen and for what money jim? I don't think it will matter what you buy, you'll lose very little in 12 months if you buy somewhere near the right price. Do you have a budget in Mind? Ste
  3. Were in the country are you jim? Maybe people can recommend you a local dealer? Ste
  4. Thanks for all your replies. I've had a good think about this and think I've come up with a plan. My reckoning is that if I've 200acres in total I can cut 600 ton a year sustainably. I'm in the fortunate position that my other business is doing quite well at the minute so should have enough money to set this one up well enough. im thinking of a 5 ton digger with shear, grab and cone splitter. Compact tractor and small timber trailer and winch to get stuff road side. Also a larger tractor and trailer for moving stuff to the yard for processing. I don't really want just one source of income so as well as logs I'm deffo gonna have a go at milling stuff and also get a charcoal kiln. I'd like to install a drying kiln as well, this is were I'm struggling a bit, I like the idea of a chp unit as renewablejohn suggested, but I'm struggling for any decent information. A biomass boiler without the electric would be alright if that's not do-able but even them trying to get in touch with the right folk that know about this stuff but don't want to take your pants down is proving hard. My mate has had a price off a well known firm to put a ready built container system in but they're talking £38000 for a 250kw system, which seems a bit dear to me? The only other thing is, is anyone harvesting and processing this much on they're own or will I definitely need staff? Thanks, Ste
  5. Been told I can rent a further 160acres of woodland if I want it so that should help. Would still welcome people's opinions on adding value to timber. Also any experience people have with chp plants. Thanks, Ste
  6. john k, it was more the adding value stuff I was thinking about, but which is best? There is an approved management plan in place yeah. And your right about doing a bit of contracting, groundsworks contracting is my day job so I in the mindset that anything I buy for my own woods will be able to earn its keep elsewhere. Renewable that sounds like it mite be of interest, but I know nothing about it, where's my best source of info? Thanks, Ste
  7. Bird it's part of a plot of land were another 'hands off' enterprise covers the rent. Mr idiot I'm not creative in the sense that I'd be good at carving but can turn my hand to things. I'd consider anything, do fancy a go at milling tho. Ste
  8. If you happen to be given 40 acres of woodland for free, had a felling license for some and thinning license for the rest. Could have whatever equipment you want to harvest/process the timber would it be possible to make a living from it? What would you do and why? The area of woodland is about a third pine trees with the remainder small hardwoods with some bigger oaks dotted around. Just planning my early retirement Cheers, Ste
  9. Hi, was doin a little daydreaming today. My main line of business is Groundworks contracting, and we do a lot of close board fencing. Now I also have about 36 acres of woodland, a lot of which is Corsican pine. I'm wondering weather there'd be any mileage in trying to mill our own timber to use for fencing, now I know we'll have to treat it but I'll sort that out sepperatly. Also I have access to a really big kiln if needs be. What's people's thoughts? Thanks, Ste
  10. Hi, thanks to some great work from Mortimer services I've 4 or so ton of timber I want shut of in cheadle. It a mixture but mostly sycamore. Want it gone as soon as, we have a digger on site to aid loading. Don't need anythin for it just want it out the way. Pm if your interested Thanks, ste

  12. Hi, my usual man is on holiday next week and I need two trees dropping on Thursday. It's not totally straightforward as they're above a stream but it's easy do-able. We'll have a 12 ton digger on site for any heavy lifting and will help were we can. Ideally a couple of decent lads and a chipper, shouldn't take all day but will pay for a full shift. The chippings can be left on site and the bigger stuff can either be taken by the tree lads or I'll arange to get it taken away. The job is in cheadle Manchester, I'll pay by bacs on the day and I'm sure I can stretch to a brew and a bacon butty as well. Is anyone able to help? Thanks, ste
  13. Hi, I've a load of Corsican pine to come down. Was just looking for ideas on what could be done with? a lot of it will go to logs but I'm just thinking is there any other ways of adding value? Is it worth milling some? If so to what sizes? And how much would I get for it done? If cut for structural size beams and such I assume it would need to be certified as fit for use? Anyone been involved in this? Would it make good fencing? If so it would need to treated? Anyone done this? Any ideas welcome, thanks, Ste
  14. A case mite be worth a try? The cx75 is a fairly solid zero swinger. And there's a few ex environmet agency machines knockin about with extra pipe work on. I don't think you'll struggle to find somethin for 20k. Proctor plant sales usually have a selection of tidy 8 tonners. Ste
  15. Yeah I'm gonna have the timber for logs Eddie Ste
  16. Where abouts are you Robbo? Ste
  17. Eddie I've 3/4 acre of small softwood I need to clear fell. Would that be somethin you fancy havin a go at with your rig? It's too small a job for a big harvesting contractor to deal with, besides there is none round me. And the trees are that small the hand cutters can't get the tonnage out in the day to make it viable. I'm in no mad rush so if you fancy a go at it let me know. Ste
