  1. Have logged it and they have requested samples as they aren't sure either. Will update as and when I hear anything.
  2. Can anyone help or has anyone seen these bark patterns before? Sweet chestnut coppice in Kent. I've seen P.cambivora and chestnut blight before but I've never seen these concentric patterns. Any ideas? Cheers.
  3. Are there any licensed carriers who would like to make a few extra quid removing the arisings from a domestic job in the Woolwich area? To go are 5 small and medium cypresses and one prunus. I'd have got most of it chipped into my transit tipper in one go were it not knackered. No sawing to be done, just needs taking or chipping and disposing of as you see fit. Will be stacked 2m from drive to point so no lumping through a garden. Off street area for loading. Will help load/chip. Would need to be done mid/end of next week but flexible on that. Pm me if interested.

  5. I was diagnosed with manic depression (bipolar disorder these days) 7 years ago. I found it very difficult to accept that I was ill rather than just weak and lazy, and I think our industry is one of the toughest ones to have this kind of industry in. We're all meant to be big tough and hairy, and the very notion that a man who uses a saw all day can be depressed is an odd one to many people. I'm a third gen forester and of course my old man was supportive of me but until I introduced him to a psychological professional I still think he believed that there was something I could actually do about it myself ' pull yourself together etc' In actual fact I have no more control over my depression than I have over the weather, and it's only when someone sees me working at 100mph for 10hrs (manic days) or sitting at home in the dark crying my eyes out because there isn't enough vinegar to have a bath (depressive days) that they kind of get the gist. These days I can more or less tell when I'm going to have a real low one,, and the medication helps to keep everything balanced so I can act accordingly. If I could act in any way I'd love to make more arbs and foresters who are depressed or have depressive symptoms know that they aren't alone in the fight. And it is a fight. Just because you could snap an investment banker like a poplar twig doesn't mean you're too tough to get depressed. It's often the very opposite in fact. The below quote from watchmen has been doing the rounds in the last couple of days but I think it's massively relevant. ' I heard a joke once: Man goes to doctor. Says he's depressed. Says life is harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world. Doctor says, "Treatment is simple. The great clown Pagliacci is in town tonight. Go see him. That should pick you up." Man bursts into tears. Says, "But doctor... I am Pagliacci." Good joke. Everybody laugh. Roll on snare drum. Curtains.' All the best everyone. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App

  9. Hi all, this is the first time I've had the guts to post pics of my stuff on here but was wondering if some of you pros could critique my first proper bear. Been doing owls for a few months and they seem to be coming out ok. Any feedback welcome. Also started experimenting with plastic eyes and burning for a couple of Mother's Day orders. 10. Hi all, friend of mine who isn't on here had a stihl 362 taken from his van on Saturday 22/3/14. Broke the window and had it away. Distinguishing features at time of theft was the post morticer attachment on it and therefore the two holes on the bar to accommodate the morticer. If anyone hears anything please let me know. Cheers. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  11. Got a couple that have come down in the winds, anyone heard of any uses for it? They aren't massive, about 300mm at 1.5 but seems a shame just to log it up. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App

  17. Yes but you'd give them a chance to do it first as it was their tree. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  18. Not that I know of. I worked for a highways department for five years as an arb and if I'd have gone into someone's garden saying that this was my tree I'd have been breaking the law. Sure, you might inform the owner of a dangerous tree that it is in falling distance that they need to carry out remedial works using some of the fine fellows on here but you don't have a right to just claim their trees as highways. If they don't carry out the works and you feel the tree is sufficiently dangerous to cause a threat to users of the highway you can issue a section 154 notice and get the works done yourself then bill them for the privilege. Your department should have a highways definition team that have records of the extent of the publicly maintainable highway. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  19. No, sadly not. Generally a highways tree is one which is undisputedly on their land ie on a grass verge next to a pavement, or one which they can't find anyone to pass the buck onto! Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  20. My bad. Should have looked closer. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  21. First pic is Pholiota, second one might be honey fungus, looks like A.mellea but not sure from the pic, third pic is sulphur tuft. Pholiota and sulphur tuft are saprophytes which is why their on older trees where some of the root plate might have gone and died. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  22. Was once employed saving Woodwasps from ignorant bystanders at a county show whilst my old man was carving. The heroic 8 year old with the hornets always got more attention than the chainsaw... Sadly I'm doing the carving these days and there aren't anywhere near as many on that site :-(. The Latin name has even just popped in my head unprompted...urocerus gigas. Clearly learnt something then :-) Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App

  24. Cool, but I'm going to donate that bit to the family walking stick sideline. See if we can't make some handles :-) Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  25. Was clearing up a field maple that came down in winds for a client today. I knew it was smothered with ivy (groan) but what I didn't know that the ivy must have been holding the blooming thing up. Anyway, finally got down to the butt and it looked like an anaconda wrapped around the stem! Measured in at 9 and a half inches at its thickest. Not saying its a record breaker but its the biggest I've seen. My Doberman for scale ;-) Well, she thinks she is anyway. And she's just as scary if you're a squirrel. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
