19th Nov 2016.Myself and a couple of others from this site were luck enough to get an invite to the Patron Hedgelaying Competition. A good day was had by all. HRH walked round & chatted with everbody and was then around while the results are given out. There was a Youngsters/Novice class this yr and he was very keen to encourage them to pursue the craft.. Well done to them all

A pic of a 'steeped' Devon hedge - Bringing right down into contact with the ground is referred to as 'layering' "...encouraging laid stems to root where they touch the ground..."
I'm just a (keen and interested) novice mind! Hoping to get along to some competitions this season!!
Blimey look yours truley, this pic from the "Devon Hedge" book or something like that..... this is hedge laying not layering, though still a brilliant picture

Narrowboat Boy, as Digga said do your home work , look around ask plenty of questions , look on the NHLS web site NHLS Home Ask about competitions look up the ploughing and hedgelaying scene, seem to go together a fair bit .. Good luck

Weather is just completely crazy, up north the poor family's being flooded out and now snow, down here were in double figures 13 deg here. Over cast, only had heating on at weekends when were home , Once I start me hedging season, thats normally means fires burning in the evening only had a hand few of those going, & 1 very light frost so far.

Don't trim right back , keeping some length you can use to help secure "lock" your pleachers in place like a lot of our work you can always cut more off if to long but sticking it back on is harder

not knowing how much you have done if any , maybe try contacting any of the contractors in your area from the National Hedgelaying society website. also see if you can find any contests about your area, give them a go see how you get on. Like any thing and everything its all experience
