  1. Ok, this seems fair Arb and Forestry work is one of the most highly dangerous jobs in the world and if I am honest NPTC/LANTRA are easy passes. The main problem i can see is that people think "yes I can do this job" when actually there not even remotely aware of the dangers involved and the level of awareness, may be people should say "Actually may be this is the wrong job for me"? It's down to professional commitment and high level of standards from the operator. This is a very touchy subject. My solution on a personal level is that I would never work with any one who is not safe and I would tell them so.
  2. Lets just say it had the last say in any matter must of been over 30 tonnes of tree there!!!
  3. We had a very large oak come down at Bicton College which was due to white rot fungi and shake. We had to anchor into a Chestnut juxtaposition to the Oak and reduce the crown so we could deal with the main stem. A series of gob cuts and straight holding cuts/step cuts was used to process the main stem.

  5. Is having a 18inch on a 550xp the equivlant of having a an 48inch on a Stihl 880 I think what we are getting at is that it is more efficent and gives the chain faster mps around the bar when using the smaller bars. I have a 13 and 15 inch bar for the 550xp and will purchase a 18inch just to see how it handels it.
  6. 1.I hear that you should not use a 18inch bar on the 550xp? 2. If the 550xp is not suited mechanically to a 18inch bar, why would Husqvarna specify that you can use a 18inch bar on the 550xp? 3.Has any one got any reasons why you would not want to run an 18inch bar on a 550xp? If there are any reasons for not using an 18 inch bar, what evidence or testing is there to back these reasons/theories ? Thanks Tom
  7. I thought there were six cuts?, in board, out board step cuts hand held and free fall, directional sink cuts, free fall and hand held, pruning cut to the branch collar, is there one more or not ?
  8. The NPTC assessment schedule for CS39 states in in section 7. ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 7. Demonstrate the use of a sewn tape sling to aid the removal of hand held sections - Tape sling selected is fit for use, appropriate to task in hand, suitably rated and LOLER compliant - Tape sling used on end of limb to act as lever/ hand hold for hand held sink cut - Tape sling used on end of limb to act as lever/hand hold for step cut hand held sections - Sling positioned correctly so not to collide with chainsaw - Sling fastened securely preventing loss of cut section - Clear warnings given to ground crew before sections are cast So do i have to actually carry out this activity in the tree because it only says demonstrate knowledge ? and i cant get my head around using a tape sling to aid removal of a section with out a rigging rope and pulley block, what does the tape sling attach to or how do you use it to suite this criteria ? Also it does not say what cuts you will be carrying out, why is this ?
