    Stihl ms390

What are you thoughts on this saw?? Picked one up on Gumtree for £170 (2003 model) that starts, runs and cuts fine but won't tick over....took it to the mechanic and he has cleaned the carb out and few other bits and got it running mint for £70 so for £240 I think I got a good deal!!! Read about all this home owner, farm worker etc stuff online about them but do any of you use one day in day out on big stuff??? Tbh mine will be used 50-60 times at most in a year so I couldnt warrant spending a great deal more than I have! Also read there hard to work on but I said that to my mechanic and he said there easy to work on lol Also what bar size/ chain would you recommend to get the best out the saw?? I'll get some pictures up when I get chance, cheers

I'll get some clearer pictures tomorrow
  4. My first stihl chainsaw (after about 6 piles of absolute crap) was a an ms210 with a 14in bar for £60 and it's a little beauty to this day!! Always handy to have around on any tree job and just as handy for doing hedges if bits are to big for the trimmers! Great round a chipper, handy on a fencing job, and it's also done it's fair share of felling small firewood trees! End of the day some jobs don't require a big saw and when you can pick these saws up for £80 like this then why not??? It's your first saw and there's no point going any bigger to you feel comfortable with that!! The biggest saw I've ever used was an ms440 in Sweden and man that thing was a beast!!! As someone who's used small chainsaws since I was 15 it was an experience just holding that animal and reving it made me instantly realise the ms210 was a mere child's toy in the cold light of reality BUT a toy that could cause major damage if used incorrectly!!! Start small, see if chainsaw work suits you and then look for something that suits you better and keep the smaller saw for smaller jobs! End of the day it works, it's got stihl on it and it's £80......no brainer
  5. Interesting vintage stihl box on ebay that might be of interest to some on here??? Stihl Chainsaw Box for Spares | eBay

Been looking at a replacement for my Jonsered 630 super until I get it sent of to spud (it's coming mate bare with me lol) and stumbled across this for £120!!! seems a cracking saw and can't wait to get it tested on a job soon!! anyone else have one and if so are they a good model???
  15. Gutted!!!! What happened to it??
  16. Well its the time of year when all our close family and friend start to have ideas on DIY gardening and tree work so as i'm sure you will all be aware you will be the first person they ask for a chainsaw, Strimmer, hedge trimmer etc etc I honestly hate lending my stuff out to people who may mean well but in reality have no idea that reving the life out of a tool on full throttle for tank after tank of MY two stroke isn't what there for but the fact is your the only one "who does that kind of work" so your first on the list i did a garage clearance few weeks back and in there was an electric chainsaw, electric hedge trimmers, electric flymo and a tiny little electric strimmer so I've stored them all in my garage and anyone wanting to borrow these tools is more than welcome as on the day they want the "proper" tools ill unfortunately be doing a tree, hedge, mowing job or whatever job the tool does that they want to borrow I was in Leicester few weeks back and forgot to take my stihl saw so went to a hire shop and they wanted a £100 deposit, two forms of id and £65 a day hire charge needless to say I just drove home and picked mine up lol but these places must make a fortune out of lending stuff out they can survive without whereas if we lend something out and it breaks it's could lose us work and a hefty bill to get it fixed!!! My new saying is "these tools are my livelyhood and your garden is your hobby, get your own stuff or help yourself to the electric tools in the corner of the garage" How do you lot deal with folk like these as i'm sure we all have it
  17. Mine ain't that model tho!! It's an 020 but not as old that! ! 1998 to be precise
  18. I've got a fully serviced 020 here running in perfect order and MIGHT consider selling it to get a bigger ground saw for the summer.....how much would it be worth.....literally been serviced last week with all brand new parts etc

    Pole saws

Do you use one if needs be?? I brought one last year and this last few weeks it's been such a handy tool to have about!! I no this is a climbers forum but surely if it saves getting your climbing gear out, line up the tree etc for a job you can do on the ground in ten mins there worth there space on the truck?? Also found there great for doing conifer hedges, perch yourself on a safe/comfy bit and can reach 12 foot away in any direction no bother Genuine thoughts on them off you guys would be great
  20. Brilliant!!! I'll message you later on to get ball rolling
  21. Yeah spud it's me! You fancy taking it on?? I no you rate these saws and i don't mind spending some on it as it's done me proud over last year or two
  22. My trusty old saw went on me yesterday 👎 took it to the repair shop and he confirmed what i already new!! Gutted ain't the word as it's a cracking saw ive had years and was always handy to have around! The guys saying scrap it but if anyone here can help id appreciate it 👍
  23. Took £90 for it in the end as the chain wasn't the best!! Glad it's gone tbh, was just gathering dust in the shed and now got a little bonus in the pot for x-mas.....
  24. cheers all!!!
  25. ive got an old stihl 041 here that is only used as a back up saw so very rarely comes out to play........was on about saws today to a bloke on site and it came up......turns out he likes that model and offered me £100 cash!! not mega money I know but its an old saw, heavy and no chain brake fitted so im thinking take it and put cash in x-mas fund in one hand and keep it as you never know in the other lol so if you had the cash on offer what would you do???
