  1. Hi i use a stihl carving bar as i bought the saw + bar off a mate. so far its done a lot of hours and i have no complaints. there is quite a lot of wear on it now but given the use i have put it to in the past 6 months its understandable. they tend to be more expensive than the others which i guess is an issue, cant say for sure they are worth the extra money either. I would go for one of the zebra bars first and see if you like using a carving bar. they look pretty good for the price and if you like it you can always go for a more expensive one next time. definitely better control with a back handle saw tho
  2. love the shape but the rot on the main-arm looks like it might pose a few problems.
  3. put it in the garden, it will give the birds something to perch on
  4. very sweet, i can see my having a go at one of those before i do next years shows
  5. Yandles? do you have a website for that? IM swithering about getting one. I could do with a large saw for teh larger pieces i am doing these days (and for competition use next year) but in the meantime, this looks like a dam fine tool
  6. love these
  7. ah, i see what you did now. like it a lot. gives me some ideas too, so maybe i havent completely lost my inspiration
  8. love the top and the idea, what does the lower section look like?
  9. v nice ross, captured the emotion well
  10. The title is Forsaken Angel. Inspired from the poem of William Blake (The Angel) and a personal story from my life. I cant say as i enjoyed carving this one, put a whole lot of emotion into it and feel a bit like i drained too much into it. Its not quite right, the form isn't quite balanced but for a 7-month carver i am not too disappointed with it. Need to decide what i am going to do with it now. Also need some new inspiration. I have lost my way now and need to see if i can find some fresh enthusiasm. thank you for the kind comments
  11. Yep, that seems to be the way. You make something that you dont really like but it was asked for and suddenly everyone wants one. I have Gruffalos on order....
  12. Aw, i loved hide and seek when i was a wee one I was carving sadness, loneliness, abandonment... seems i managed to capture a bit of it at least. Maybe a cathartic piece for me, maybe not
  13. made me laugh I suspect it will be Forsaken angel. I have been thinking about "The Angel" by William Blake, one of my favorite poems. To me it is always a sad poem about loss, i always see it as the angel gives everything but she pushes him away, hides from him her love, eventually he leaves. When they meet again later its too late "the tree of youth had fled". Always struck me as a very sad poem. alternatively its just me hacking away at a poor defenseless piece of wood
  14. No name for this yet although i know what it will probably end up being carved out of fairly green pine so may well crack Inspiration from you Kim and your 'sorrow' piece. needs a few finishing touches and then to figure out what i am going to do with him
  15. is a good price... thanks for teh warning
  16. Is great news Craig. Shame didnt get to see you today but hopefully early next week bring pics
  17. I love this one Kim, lovely piece. Reminds me of an angel sculpture (in stone) i am trying to emulate in wood. Its called Remembrance and Redemption Angel So far i have only roughed-out one side but there is something about sorrow that seems to fit the wood somehow. If i ever manage to complete it good enough Ill post some pics
  18. Hey, sorry i didnt notice this message. I dont know that i can answer this but im sure somebody could (i carve but im not a saw guru). want my advice? bit the bullet and post some pics onto the carving forum. if you send me pics ill have a look at my saw when i strip-clean it this evening after a days carving
