  1. Its a bit steep for the tractor and trailer so will be a job for the purpose built.

I have though about crossloading it and using a tractor and trailer to run the wood out but in reality to make it worthwhile it needs to be a decent size tractor and trailer, sort of negating the point in having a smaller set up.

I know none of the options are brilliant, just trying to find out the least bad

  2. Thanks for the replies, spoke to the only guy I know with a wagon and drag and he wouldnt fit 2 bays of 3m on because of his crane location.

Muttley Ill you for his number as that could be the ideal solution.

Ill take a look at the options for a 26t gvw rigid. If I were to source a flatbed one woul it be suitable for moving plant on with seperate ramps or would it be too unstable. Thinking tractors or 8t -13t 360's?

The residents have requested smaller lorries with more trips in and out.

Peter any makes or models to look out for, I know very little about HGV's? Just browsing the internet there seems to be a lot of 6x4 26t tonners avaliable so that makes it a bit better option. What is the biggest size you can have on 4 wheels?

  3. I know there are a few threads bouncing around at the moment about people looking into their first lorries etc.

We have around 1000T of Ash firewood to come out of a site over 2 years, access to the woodland is problematic and the owner has agreed with the residents to not use full size timber lorries so we cannot have arctic's or wagon and drag on site.

Does anyone run smaller lorries than the above in the south east for timber haulage, as finding someone who did would solve a lot of the problems?

Secondly what sort of size and weight vehicle would be recommended, in an ideal world being able to fit 2 bunks of 3m on, with a payload of 12t ish? Having a crane would be useful but we could load with the forwarder and unload with the 360 at the other end if weight limits would be getting close.

Finally can someone give me a rough idea of running costs per mile/per year etc for a rig like this as i'm just guessing numbers really.

    Thanks in advance

  4. Just a few pictures of the work we have done to the forwarder over the last few weeks between sites.

There was one play the center pivot so we changed the bearings but it made no difference so we stripped it out to discover the main center joint was worn to a oval shape, about 5mm off side to side and 10mm front to back. So split it in half and have it machined out circular with a sleeve pressed in, all back together with new bearings it feels 100% better!

The front end of the engine was a bit of as mess with wrong sized pulleys, broken fan, bodged up alternator brackets etc, so have replaced the leaky old rad with a new alloy rad with build in electric fan and in line thermo controller. New water pump, thermostat, belts and sorted the horrible alternator brackets that were cobbled together.

Finally new hoses on the grab and new hose guard from Approved Hydraulics sorted out the leaky grab problem and it should be back in the woods this week. Will get some pictures of it out working.

  5. Try speaking to these guys, They should be able to help you out with the complete saw unit, however it wont be cheap but good things never are!

Otherewise why not contact the factory built processor manufacturers and ask to buy a replacement saw motor, that way you know it will work for the intended application.

finally what about ditching the saw completely and going for a shear type set up instead of the saw. You may have to put a cone splitter on the digger instead of the grab to break down large wood if thats what you are processing but it will be a lot simpler.

  6. Need to have a big yard clearout so have around 200t, possibly more of arb arisings to clear. Mixture of hard and softwood, between 6 months and 4 years old, most is manageable by hand.

Can arrange for delivery by tractor and trailer or grab lorry or bring your tipper and trailer. £50 per load no matter the size, you pay haulage. pm or call me during the week for more details

    Thanks

  7. I went for the bruunett last week and it arrived on site yesterday and been put to work straight away. So far everything seems to be working well, the bearings in the center pivot have a bit of play and will be replaced over the christmas break.

I have only had a quick play in it but the crane is so much faster and more powerful than the one on our forwarding trailer.

All in all pretty pleased with how it performing so far

  8. Im planning on going to look at a tidy FMG 678 this week, anything particular to check out? It will be an upgrade from the my tractor and forwarding trailer, any other machines to look at that are a similar age, size, price etc?

Finally what are spares like to get hold of, I know that engines and boxes are fairly standard affair but what about bogies, crane spares etc?

    Thanks

  9. It has been in the workshop a while but finally got out on site to test with the new toys.

Has had external guarding inc removable screed guards front and rear, Intermercato grapple saw with separate solenoid controlled valve block and suregrip controls, new pipework down the boom etc. Few issues need sorting out with the saw but on the whole pleased with how it has been performing after its modifications.

  10. We are looking to employ an airspade technician to assist with our decompaction and explorations works. We are based near to Gatwick, in Surrey and most of the work is in central london.

Ideally you will have a good understanding of trees, roots and general plant biology.

You will be aware of BS5837:2012 and BS3998:2010,

ideally you will understand the process of tree survey in relation to construction, Root Protection Areas etc.

This is a physical role so a general level of fitness is required.

This role would suit someone who is looking for a slightly less physically demanding role than climbing and still wants to work around trees.

part or full time with very good wage and bonus packages.

Email: [email protected] or call David on 07896 036 437

    Thanks

  11. Thanks for the replies so far.

It is fixed mount grapple with a worm drive rotator.

In standard form the machine only has 1 single acting aux line off of a foot pedal, this has then had a solenoid diverter valve fitted to allow for a 2 way circuit off of joystick buttons that currently operated a tilt bucket for grading.

my other idea was to take the feed from the existing hammer line, remove the foot pedal and put this straight into the extra block.

Essentially I need to get 2x two way circuits and 1 single acting circuit down to the head.
