  1. And Gordon didn't do us many favours

He was too incompetent to realise that reverend sir just call me Tony was slipping out the back door just before the proverbial hit the fan.

He was also too stupid to realise that his Tonyness was letting him deal with the mess because he knew Grumpy Gordon would make such a cock up of it that we'd all forget how useless Blair was.

That said, when Gordon and his wife lost their child I thought he behaved in a most dignified way and I felt for him a great deal, it was something no one should have to deal with.

He was still hopeless at his job though...

  2. I was fields away from Sheperds.... Grew up with the lads from there, along with others in the area....Used to walk there all the time... back in the old days they had it all rough, exploring that place was magic, and we used to climb the mountain on boots. Remember?

Teh we moved to Presteigne, most eastern town in wales. The rest is history :D

I think the heyday for the store was the 80's & early 90's, going there was a proper adventure. Remember the green ex-mil torches with the 90 degree end and interchangeable filters? Don't know an boys of my age who didn't have one of them! They had some great stuff, I had an arctic sleeping bag and gore-tex bivvy from there somewhere

You know they had to sell the jet they had outside? Think the APC's have gone as well now.

I went to Ludlow college with a few of the Presteigne lot in 96/97/98.

    When did you move away?

  3. So she gave the unions a damn good hiding? They were only trying to stick up for the working man (admittedly in a far too dogmatic fashion), compromise on both sides would have kept this country great, but history is always written by the victors

I disagree with the whole union structure. A good idea spoiled.

Holding the country to ransom, you either want your job or you don't.

If it's not good enough let someone else have it. And the union leaders rabble rousing and manipulating the members, as it transpired not in their best interests, should have been stripped of all their cash and assets.

It was unfortunate that the UK mining industry was no longer viable in it's traditional form, and that the unions destroyed any chance of a more streamlined mechanised version of the industry continuing to employ a smaller number of workers.

What it wasn't, was entirely the government's fault. Modern history shows time and again that unions harm workers more often than they help them.

Business and industry is, like it or not, led from the top. When mass action by employees tries to strong arm management into a business model which cannot work, the workers end up with less than they had before.

I'm not saying the closure of the collieries was right, but I do think it could have been avoidable in more cases than it ended up being, had union leaders not been so arrogant insisting they knew better than NCB leaders. Even if they did, they didn't hold the deeds so it wasn't up to them.

It was a sad period of our history which, just like the failure of BL and latterly Rover, should have been a wake up call to unions, and their members.

Unfortunately humans rarely learn from our own mistakes....

FWIW, I think she was, without compare, the greatest post war PM this country has had, and that will probably hold true for some years to come.

  4. thanks me too, been searching long and hard for such a tidy example, i too dont like the new shiner fancier ones

A friend of mine has one of the new ones, great big lump of a thing it is.

The new ones aren't a scratch on these ones in terms of both agility or aesthetic proportion in my opinion... Good choice :thumbup1:

And in the fashionable colour of white too! :thumbup1: How very footballers wives :001_tongue::laugh1:

  5. Just out of curiosity Alistair what if it was your employee groundie who got injured in this unfortunate event would you still be holding the other company liable?

In the eyes of the law they would still be ultimately liable as the main contractor.

Liability climbs as high as it can before biting in the face whoever it stops at.... :001_smile:

Might also crawl back and nip a few others but it always goes as high as it can first....

  6. A very accomplished woman who changed this country for the better in my view.

Utmost respect for her having the nerve to stand up to the trade unions, Argentina etc.

We could do with someone with her grit now to nip their potential resurrection in the bud.

To my mind her detractors are the 'something for nothing / chip on their shoulder brigade'. For her to get where she did as a woman in that era would have taken a dedication and determination far more powerful than anything shown by those who bemoaned her.

I also think that the terminally controversial community charge was also good idea in principal [in that it wasn't a bad idea as such], after all, it's not a big expensive house with 4 people living in it which generates rubbish or uses the public libraries, it's people, so charging individuals for their use of public services makes a degree of sense to me even now. Still needs a little work of course :laugh1:

Unfortunately it was terribly poorly implemented. [Although more so by local authorities than central government]

Their inefficiency and incompetence continues to this day.

You'll be missed, Mrs Thatcher :thumbup1:

  7. Now fellow forum contributors,

I bask in your words of thanks.

    Cos:001_huh:

Yer stock reaction from any self respecting Farmer locally would have bin!

How the feck did ye get bogged there:lol:, or why:001_rolleyes:

    Cheers

    Marcus

    Ps

Having purchased the crawler I am now being buried under mountains o lovely free hardcore, with a good local contact for more.

    Sigh!

We all pissed ourselves at you getting stuck in the first place already when you posted the photo the other day....

  8. Where are you,& what experience have you, this will help people help you.:001_smile:

I'm guessing touching himself, eating crisps, living with his parents, not having a girlfriend and congratulating himself on his superior wit and intelligence....

    Anything I've missed......?:001_huh::lol:

  9. "Principal contractors are responsible for ensuring the health and safety of everyone on site".

Few realise this, but even the site owners etc are the main contractors responsibility when it comes to H&S.

This is very true. We had a run in with a nw/nf merchant a few years ago when a carpet fitter fell down an open manhole on one of our sites.

These scumbags came after us as we were the main contractor for the fit out.

We would have been done as well if we didn't have a watertight site set up and induction system.

We had only taken possession of the inside of the building and an access route and compound at the front. The outside was still under a different main contractor who had built the shell. The carpet fitter had been employed by the client.

It was only because we had inducted this bloke and he had expressly gone against his induction, which he had signed against, and used a different door in direct contradiction to our instructions that I managed to extract us from the situation.

I don't see how the contractor Alistair was working for has a leg to stand on.

I generally don't like litigation of insurance claims but this one feels entirely fair and justified.... :001_smile:

  10. Is he a truck driver or a wannabe truck driver ? Is he a driving instructor ? He seems to loose his rag with other forums ( see his letter to ebay L.O.L. ) or is he just a sad knob ?

If pushed I'd probably place my money on the latter..... :001_tongue: What a very peculiar chap....:confused1:.

Oh well, not exactly any skin off our noses is it..... :001_rolleyes::001_smile:

  11. Would we have a different view if it turned out this old boy was after free wood to sell on to his neighbours? We're all assuming on both sides of the fence here. What if the old fella had waltzed into your front garden and nailed a tree just for the wood. It all depends on your perspective.

Very true. None of us on here know the full circumstances, only what we've seen in 1 report. All perspectives at this stage are valid, even the unpalatable ones.

Until we know more it's just speculation.

  12. I've seen people using the long curly keyrings in the past and also those ID badge recoil devices. A tutor of mine had a silky pocket boy on a wrist strop!

I used that arrangement before I moved to a fixed blade and a SAWPOD.

    Worked quite well! :thumbup1:

  13. Just as an aside, I wouldn't go with an advertised no win no fee, they are not in it for you Ali, all they will do is string it out and try and rack up a big fee for themselves, the longer they string it out the more they will earn.

Go with a private solicitor who will run a similar insurance scheme where there will be nothing for you to pay should you lose except a small insurance premium, just the same as the tv no win no fee shites.

Most of the time the solicitors bills are at least ten times what the payout to the claim is

100% agree with Dean on this. Don't let those scum bags get their paws on anything....

The long and short of it is that as a sub-contractor employed by someone you are covered by their ELI. Not only are you covered but it sounds very much like your employer was in breach of health & safety so could well get fined.

Broken bones are a big deal to the HSE.

Get a solicitor on it, or perhaps even contact your own liability insurers, they may go after his insurers.

  14. I need a couple of fools for utterly mindless re-spacing this Thursday and Friday near Martletwy west Wales. I won't mention the Brambles and gorse, that can be a nice supprise.

    P.M if you are intrested

I can't see how you could possibly sell this any better Murray..... :001_huh::lol::lol:

  15. Very nice but i think i like the authentic no skill, someones gonna die approach.

We should encourage all north koreans to rebuild their nation that way

They keep rattling the sabre they might have no choice! :laugh1:

  16. Emergent service worker - does that mean I'm nearly at the surface of the gloop or I've just got out of the private swimming pool? (Mind if we're talking top level health spa, it could be both at the same time.)

Always considered myself to be.'working class' and proud of it. If it was for the hoi polloi, the aristos wouldn't have their standing. I am, we are the pillars of society. Without us, all would fall, (or emigrate).

Who knows! Life is what you make it.

Only person I now who came out in that class owns Muddy Boots Foods..... So can't be that bad :001_huh::biggrin:
