  1. Distel gecko aluminium spikes. Good all round wrap and good grip on the tree. look them up for your own opinion.
  2. Hi mate, i have a pair and they are some of the comfiest boots iv ever worn. The biggest selling point for me was the goretex lining. Iv got a pair of Distel gecko aluminium spikes and iv never had any pain from them. Well worth the money i think. Im in mountain rescue and if i get a call out i dont bother changing my boots, just keep them on and go. Happy shopping mate:thumbup:
  3. Yeah iv got 30/31/38/39 mate. Ill be totally honest, im not the most experienced guy out there but im very hard working, willing to learn and reliable. Where abouts do you work then? Mate any chance to come and prove my worth would be greatly appreciated.
  4. Yeah i thought as much, to be honest i dont mind commuting at all. I just need the work as im fast running out of savings. Cheers for the reply mate.
  5. Hi all, my parents have just bought their retirement house in Swanage so i have another base!! Im based in mid Wales but if anyone needs a second climber/Groundie in mid march onwards then id be happy to come down. I was thinking of moving down but want to see what the work situation is like down there first. I have all my own PPE, Saws, climbing kit etc. Just putting the feelers out there. Cheers in advance Paul
  6. Sorry, should also have said i have first aid at work and 4 day mountain first aid. Cheers Paul
  7. Sorry, just a cheekey wee bump!
  8. Im going to speak to my mates dad tomorrow with her there so hopefully it will get sorted. Its such a shame because she is a lovely girl. Also not too hard on the eyes! I dump the chip up at a mates farm who uses it. Honestly thanks a lot for all the advice guys. Ill keep you posted as to what happens. Paul
  9. As soon as they said they wanted the large one taken down i got on the blower and found that it is on a conservation area. I cant fell it because its between the river bank and the cottage. So ill have to climb it. I reckon it will be an extra 300 on top of the 600 quoted for the small ones. Plus i have staff to pay, running the unimog with chipper etc. i Have been on the phone to a solicitor today and he has said that if they havent obtained written permission to take it down then they have to pay the full amount quoted for the small ones within 14 days or he would help me take it to the small claims court. Told my mate this and she is going to have serious words with her old man. Aparently he has tried it on with other guys in the past and they have just taken it to avoid trouble. Not this time mate!
  10. Or play the nutcase card and turn up naked covered head to toe in black boot polish to do the rest of the work:confused1: Genius! although its pretty damn cold here in wales!
  11. The castle owners have said it is fine but i have just been on the phone to the council and as i expected the castle grounds and the tree are part of a conservation area . which is fine but the guy isnt going to hand over a penny until i have done the large ash. And now he is refusing to contact the conservation department to get permission.
  12. All points well made gents. The other ash belongs to the castle grounds next door but aparently they had permission to take it down which i was unaware of. I will try and meet them half way but if that doesnt work then i guess ill just have to bite the bullet and get on with it. I cant afford to get a bad reputation. It is a comfort to know im not the only one out there that this has happened to. Guess its a learning curve. Written quotes from now on me thinks. Cheers for all the advice lads and wish me luck. Paul
  13. A friend of mine managed to get me a job from her parents, They wanted a row of ash taken down and logged up for firewood. The purpose of taking them down was to get their view of the river back. I quoted them 600 for the row of small/med ash. Once we had finished the job i went to the house for payment but was told that i had to take a LARGE ash down as well just the other side of their fence as well. Then i was told that i would have to do it included in the original price of 600. The misunderstanding is that i thought they just wanted the trees directly in front of the house taken down and they thought that i gave them a quote for the small/med ones and the big one as well. Now he is refusing to pay anything until i include the large ash in the 600 quoted. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Am i in the wrong? What can i do? Cheers in advance Paul.
  14. Yeah to honest im not really in a position to refuse work. Iv explained all the pros and cons so ill just have to make the best of a s**t situation. The thing i was most worried about was someone else seeing the state of the tree and presuming it was my handy work, therefor losing me other potential clients. Cheers for the advice lads, ill try stick some pics up of before and after.
  15. Forgot to say that the guys who did it before were local cowboys known in the area. They have ruined lots of tree in the area but are cheap so people keep using them over qualified and competent arborists.
  16. I have just had a call from a woman who wants her tree topped. So i went round to have a look and as the title says the tree had previously been topped. The height and width werent affected as much as i had thought they may have been but still it must have looked like hell for a few years. Its recovered fairly nicely but the woman wants it done again. Iv tried to convince her to have it thinned rather than topped but she is set on having it cut right back again. What should i do? Its a 20-25 foot beech by the way. Cheers all Paul

    Strops

I use a 3.5m split tail with a petzl fixed side pulley and a 10 mm eye to eye prussik. Iv had a play around with a few hitches but iv narrowed it down to either the VT or distel. Either way i prefer to buy and make my own setup. That way i can chop and change what i use. If it works and its safe then its good.

    New spikes.

Yeah i ended up going for the aluminium distel geckos in the end. I have climbed in them before and found them really comfy. Thanks again for all the advice guys!
  19. Hi, i am wanting to get a new pair of spikes now and am a bit unsure of what to get. Any ideas? i have heard good things about the stein aluminium ones or the Bashlin aluminium with velcro pads. Does anyone own either of these or know any better ones? Cheers in advance
  20. Hi all i am going to head back down to my home in wales soon but before i go i was just wondering if anybody needs a hand in Glasgow due to hurricane bawbag the 2nd today. I have cs30/ cs31/ cs38/ cs39, all my own saws, PPE and climbing kit. I just figured that some of you guys may be quite busy over the next week or so, so i thought id offer my services. Can stay up as long as needed. Cheers Paul:thumbup1:
  21. cheers bud, can give reference if needed. Not sure if you know Dan Farnworth but have been doing bits and bobs for him but not regular work. Hence the search.
  22. Hi all, im based in mid wales/ hereford border (Hay-on-wye) and am desperate for any work. I have cs30 cs31 cs38 cs39, all my own saws, PPE and climbing kit etc. Hard worker, dont mind early starts and late finishes. If anybody has or knows anybody that needs a hand please let me know. Anything from dragging brash and feeding chipper to climbing. Cheers guys Paul
  23. Stick with 200t mate. More gutsy than 201. Most guys i speak to prefer the 200t. As for me i stick with what i know. It would be crap if you bought a 201 and found that its not as good as 200 and your stuck with it. But if you can get a go with a 201 and you prefer it then go for it. Happy hunting dude!
  24. It was simple! New tank of fresh fuel! Took a few goes but she fired up! Thanks for all the replies lads!
