Good point. Without specific records of a solitary tree we can only assume. Quote tree species specific ectomycorrhizal macrofungi and their successive places in the tree species specific life cycle, trees with a shorter life span this may be possible . example Prunus /Malus but as we are all aware that trees from different provenances can vary if grown in the same location. and some becoming more susceptible to colonisation of specific ectomycorrhizal macrofungi than others.

Now then Hama would this tree qualify as a veteran. the crown is OK But the roots? There isn't any soil under the main stem.

Crap or not. There is no way of accurately judging the age of a tree. You might have a park with extensive flora forna and fungi and have 2 trees planted 100 or more years apart with the same colonisations. this information will only tell you the extent of the biodiversity of that area.

the old way was to measure the tree at DBH and each inch would count as one year. example 36in DBH + 36 Years. depending on species, Or cut it down and count the rings. Lets see how wrong this is

Yes and No. cut and pasted from an earlier attachment. In the UK the term ‘veteran’ is used to describe both the age and condition of a tree. A ‘veteran tree’ has the anthropomorphic, cultural connotations of a battle-scarred survivor: a valued, old comrade that has been through the tribulations of life. ‘Veteran’ has come to describe the quality of dead wood habitat in trees. it has been mentioned that if a tree is severely infected and near the end of its life and not the expected lifespan for the species it is classed as a veteran. This is were I am interested in peoples opinions

Totally agree. but an oak of the same age with every dysfunction and infection going under guide lines would, So to what degree of degradation would qualify. percentage of larger dead wood for example. or any visible degree of fungal infection.

No I hadn't. There was a lot of reaction timber on the root buttresses I did notice that all of the oaks on the estate are loaded with acorns and a lot with knopper gall.

Thank you sean. Very useful documents, but the point of this thread was to find out peoples personal opinions, for example an oak tree of say 100 years old with only natural dead wood in it. would somebody class this as a Veteran

I would be interested in peoples views as to how a tree qualifies as a veteran tree. Age near to the end of its healthy life? What age should a particular species be? Would large healthy tree qualify? Would you say it has to have serious damage and infection? Could there be a minimum diameter depending on species? Looking to some interesting comments...

This is some of my friends work, the insides are as smooth as the outsides. you can see how deep he turns by the depth of the walking stick stands. He has designed a special tool to do this. You can't see the insides from these pics but you can see the size of the work he does.
