Hi Andy, nice to hear from you again... I found what I was looking for. Have you hear of geocaching? Well I discovered that there is geocaching in trees which is just what I was looking for. I need a goal when climbing trees for some reason and this sounds perfect for me. If anyone doesn't know it envolves leaving a log of your visit in a cache which is placed in a tree and registered with a GPS coordinate for you to find the tree. Sounds fun, nice and high up. PS. Hi everyone, I moved into the academic side of the industry this year but am desperate not to let my skills and fitness decline, therefore its seems natural to look into recreation climbing. I have been out to a few local trees but it soon occurs to you that finding and gaining permission to climb the more interesting looking trees is the main issue along with having someone around who can help if you get into a little difficulty. Can anyone share experiences or even trees which where permission may be granted? I assume there are some formal clubs too but I am not sure if this is the case. Regards, squiralsquasmosis

Hi everyone, It has been some time since I have posted and some of you many have thought I had fallen from a tree or any of the other potential hazards encountered in this profession but no, I have been fourtunate enough to enter the academic side of the industry. Recently I have been envolved in procuring this seasons stock for replanting and although I cant fault the nurseryman for the condition of the trees there is little opportunity for provenance of stock to suit the city I service. This issue should concern our industry and is highlighted with threat posed by ash dieback and how it has exposed the working of tree nursery industry. If the tree nursery industry continues to work to economies of scale in my view the likelyhood potential problems listed will increase: Monoculture of stock Weak potential disease resistance Transit cost and disease importation I fail to see how the industry in its current state can tackle these problems as my experience in trying to source trees recently has shown me. I only want to highlight this issue with the beginning of this thread as I wonder if anyone has any ideas/plans in regard to providing provenance for future planting already in place or can give me more insight into how the industry functions. It is a funny thing when I started looking for fungus when studying arb, as you discover their past uses they take on a new life. Less like the tree killers they first appear. Makes them easier to remember too.

I developed a great deal of interest in this fungi when I discovered its fire tinder uses, not a bad looker too. I'll keep my eye out I'm sure its here somewhere...does it seem favour any environmental conditions? Thanks

In five years I have yet to see Fomes fomentarius in my area, Essex or North Essex to be precise. I believe birch and beech are the common hosts. Has anyone seen Fomes in Essex?

Recent news coverage of the sale of FC woodland brought to my attention the public interest in woodland ownership, particularly in regard to recreational use of woods. Also it is my understanding that many small woodlands are already managed on behalf of private owners for recreational value as opposed to timber production. Considering these developments I was wondering if any woodland managers were having to incorporate such pursuits as woodland crafts ie. bodging or bushcraft/survival skills in their management plans? Otherwise do you think this would be a viable opportunity for an industry within the current woodland landscape?

I hadn't had too much experience in this area and reading the threads gave me some invaluable examples to chew over. I was thinking of taking the Professional Tree Inspection course soon and was interested in anyones past experience of this course and its value as a qualification. I have passed the Tech cert tree condition exam and wondered how they compare.

I went straight for the L3 qualification. In my thirties now so tried to get ahead, nearly went to plan!

Hi, I recently took the AATC L3 examinations and passed all but the woodland management unit. This includes Tree condition and identification which would apply to this employment. I am seeking experience in a surveying role and would like to know if unit qualification is acceptable.

Another nearly pass from me too. Woodland management this time. I wonder if a may exam could be possible, there is money in it for them. It does leave me feeling annoyed as i felt i had little knowledge of what to expect with this one but what can you do wait a whole year i guess!

Does anyone know if there is any cs39 courses running before the year is out. Preferably in south east.
