Logs are hard work, but can give you a wage. Dependant on where you are in the UK, another way of making money Nov - March is salt spreading. You can get a 'snowex' (or whatever it's called) spreader that fits on th eback of a transit/ hilux etc. then just drive round private factories and private carparks etc spreading salt. Downside is - most of it is night work. And only if its cold. A lot of people are getting into this round my way

Hi all, I need some help / legal guidance. I own a piece of land (3/4 acre) on the edge of a village, which is officially classed as agricultural land was an old stack yard for the dairy farm which has since been developed into 5 houses. It is however outside of the village envelope but strangely inside the conservation area of the village. I have been using the land to process my logs on a casual as and when basis throughout the year. Last November the local council enforcement officer paid me a visit after complaints about the noise. He also said I needed planning permission to process the logs as it was classed as an industrial operation. He advised me to put doors on my barns and then open up the back to the fields to let the noise out the back, and only cut up the cord inside the barns. Then apply for planning permission, I didnt bother as he never sent me the forms like he said he would. To try and avoid any trouble I did put doors on the barns and have been cutting up inside using and electric chainsaw, yes I did say electric. Stihl MSE 220C. This made it a very quiet operation. But yet again the local idiots have got together and now the enforcment officer has wrote to me telling me I am not allowed to process my logs on my land. Does anybody know anything about whether you need planning permission or not? Any advice would be moist appreciated. P.s. I have thought about retaliation to the local idiots, but for now I am remaining calm. Have however had a couple of offers on my land from friends within the travelling community, and its so tempting to sell the yard and move, as it does have planning permission for 4 log cabins and a big storage barn. did woolworths ever sell logs??????????? selling firewood is not easy, there is alway's 'a bloke down the pub' who will do a trailer load for 50 quid !!!!!! One day people may realise that a trailer load is not a sensible measure of quality or quantity. I sell by the cubic meter, I am certainly not the cheapest around here. I set my standards at the beging, good quality logs and excellent service = Happy repeat customers and a steady cash flow with reasonable profit return

For me its a side line to being a builder, but when its raining or freezing cold u cant work outside or lay bricks. So I use the firewood as a fill in job. I usually just buy in the cord and process it when we get the chance. It was actually another builder who got me into it as he and his dad have been doing firewood for over 30 years. As with any business you only get out what u put in !!

Has anybody got any ready processed hard wood for sale? I am looking for 100 + ton, delivered loose. Cash waiting I would also take cord wood whether seasoned or fresh cut.

Has anybody used the stihl MSE 220 (MS220E) electric chainsaw?? I need to buy an electric saw as my delightful neighbours have complained to the council enforcement officer about the noise of my MS440 and MS250. I tend to process about 150 ton plus of firewood using chain saw and axe, and yes I am a mad man but it keeps me fit So I need a quiet but powerful saw. Any feed back would be appreciated, Thanks
