  1. Just bought a new chipper... so i owe the finance co. quite a bit!!
  2. Hi Paul, its Pete Hart....hope you are well and business is going good for you and Ian? Hopefully catch up with you soon mate!

  3. good point monkey-d.... the lad will no doubt have taken a big knock in confidence, and getting stuck into a few more cuts will help build it back up. I should imagine the pressure of the customer standing there watching didn't help him at all either!!
  4. Wow! That must have been pretty scary when that went CRACK... however as mentioned above, a very important and serious example of what can happen when doing this job. I hope your lad will take on board exactly what happened so that next time it can be avoided!
  5. Im finding that more often than not, doing logs is a pain in the backside. I have had the exact same experience and plenty of others to boot! Sometimes wonder why i bother!!
  6. Having read all of the posts so far i was going to say make sure you charge the customer really well!! but £150..........
  7. .....
  8. I remember the bloke from 'the foresters' (liverpudlian accent) i asked him to email me some details through and recieved nothing!! Suprise suprise! Then a bloke from Burnley phoned with the offer of advertising in a children abuse awareness calender...same thing happened (no email) Then today, another scouser pretending to be phoning from the police media and marketing department (!!!) telling me that for 300 quid i could be the sole tree surgeon in a publication which was coming out and that i would be given tree work with local care homes and hospitals! Once again no email sent through and all of the above were phoning from withheld numbers and wouldn't give me a surmane or adress! They all wanted payment from debit cards (which is the crucial thing as far as the scam goes, as you can kiss goodgye to that money for good!) Rant over... Pete
  9. Your right mate, it is annoying and such a waste of good working time... I just wanted to point it out to anyone who hadn't had the misfortune of dealing with these people yet, as the thought of anyone parting with their hard earned money to such scams makes me sick!
  10. Hey guys, as a business owner i'm getting an increasing number of phone calls (from mainly scousers!) about advertising for charity leaflets/publications, and the most recently 'the chance to be the tree surgeon of choice for the police, fire brigade, and ambulance service.' Promising me loads of work and an advert in a magazine educating the public about rogue traders!! They only want debit card transactions (therefore your money will disapear for ever) and no advert or publication ever gets circulated. My dad is in the motor trade near bristol and gets pestered with the same scams too. Just wanted to warn other tree folk that these parasites are about and use all sorts of cunning stories to try and catch you out! Please...you have been warned!! Pete P.s No offence intended to liverpudlians not involved in advertising scams!!
  11. Gransfors bruks.......without doubt
  12. thanks for all the input guys....shall defo be using red when i pick up the chipper on weds!
  13. excellent... i know essentially its simply 'dye' that makes it red but i have seen on other machinery based forums that people have had performance issues using red. Contrary to all of that... i shall defo be taking advantage of the savings!!
  14. Hi guys, just in the process of getting my first chipper, and whilst doing the sums on running costs etc, it occured to me that with a chipper not being eligable for road duties i should take advantage and use red diesel. Firstly...does this effect performance/life of the machine? secondly...will it invalidate the warranty? Any thoughts will be gratefully recieved! Pete
  15. it will be chip that i need to get rid of
  16. Thank you guys... i shall get in touch with veolia - cheers Chestnut!!
  17. and if that doesn't work.... i have to nag the missus for a rub down!!
  18. I make sure i spend 10 to 15 minutes stretching every morning before work. I concentrate on the main muscle pairings, back and neck.... it gets me going and nice and supple first thing. Given that a decent cure is all too difficult to find (pharmaceuticals for this and that!), prevention is the only thing on my mind!
  19. according to the customer... the deal would have been worth thousands
  20. Hi guys, can anyone help me with some info regarding green waste disposal near Baughurst, (nr Basingstoke)? Im going to be doing a garden clearance for an old uni mate there in a couple of weeks time and as i dont know the area at all, i was wondering if anyone local to there could point me in the right direction to a suitable place of disposal? If its not too much hassle could i get an indication of costs per weight/load (chip) etc? many thanks, Pete.
  21. I recently got asked if i would take down a multi stemmed ash which was approx 75-80ft tall and 4ft diameter in return for the logs...no payment at all! ......I think not!! By the time you account for labour, petrol, diesel, two stroke, chain oil, wear and tear, disposal of brash/chip, insurance, advertising to get the job in the first place, and your blood and sweat, it is certainly not worth it..oh and then you have to split the wood, stack it, season it, find a customer, and deliver it!
  22. Point taken, groundie extra 85kg....tools possibly same again if not more. So all in about 800kg ish to play with after 'chipper nose weight'
  23. Point noted! looks like i need yet another ticky box/signature sheet to go in the van at all times then!
  24. Hi guys looking for help and advice... in the process of buying a new chipper for the first time, and was wondering where i stand on the issues of weight. My van is a ford transit tipper with tool box inbetween the bed and cab. Empty weight is 2550kg approx, which leaves me roughly a tonne to play with for green waste (or chip). However, if i hitch up a t-wolf 150 dhb at 740kg, will that leave me with only 250kg ish for chip? OR is it based upon the 'nose weight' of the chipper at the ball hitch to consider? (hope that is clear enough to understand!) The friendly guy a t-wolf said it would be the weight at the nose, but i would really like to clarify, as the fine and penalty points for being overloaded doesn't appeal much!! Also does anyone have a rough idea about how much chip weighs (i.e cubic metre/tipper bed with high sides full..etc) Any response would be greatfully recieved, Pete.
  25. I started to doubt myself too... which as a result led to me slashing my prices to match those being cast about by pottential customers. Stick to your guns because quality firewood and quality reliable service always wins - it takes time and a hard slog, but you will get there. I realised i was underselling my firewood by a long way, which makes no sense given the hard work put into producing it. If it has to stay drying out in my wood barn, then so be it... but i'm definately not going to give it away!
