  1. Sure it's not Metasequoia glyptostroboides?
  2. Well this is it mounted on my cycling helmet. All I know Is if I wanted to do this with a go pro I'd have a big square thing poking out! :-D
  3. That's a good one! Also if you are a good aim. Use a bungee for smaller logs.
  4. Where abouts are you? We're down in East Sussex. This chap stops by on his rounds to us he is in West Sussex.
  5. Some sound words to the tune of "you'll be long dead before they give you any worry love"
  6. I used to use a large knife company but now we have an old dude called Bill who turns up with his wife in an old Ford courier. This for me is excellent as I love random bill and his random car and random wife.😅 Joking aside he travels and is efficient and almost a third cheaper than the big guns.
  7. Pretty black and white for me. Sadly for the owner its their bad. Owners and occupiers liability act. HOW EVER in instances when strong winds occur insurance companies would pay for damage. But good luck navigating the intricacies of that! Some companies don't cover "acts of god". If the owner of the failed tree has no property insurance that probably wouldn't count in their favour if it escalated as this sort of shows negligence. I can see how these sorts of rows occur though.
  8. With regard to your OP, I use Mac screen shot Google earth then use the built in "preview.App" to circle trees, identify residence, and any landmarks. I have however had this thrown back in my face as its technically copyrighted. I think it was Mid-sussex DC that didn't like it. Very much depends on on whonyour dealing with. Belt and braces is the best approach as it is a legal process.
  9. Possibly OT, but I've noticed that while using the online .gov.uk portal thing. Some local authorities such as Lewes district council. Stipulate essential submission material as a tree report! Which can play havoc with a little birch in a conservation area as we don't charge to liase with LA. To combat this I send a blank document with NO DOCUMENT AVAILABLE. as I feel its unreasonable to expect a report with every request. I do however understand that its probably a step to prevent people from applying for all kinds of **** when "their Neighbors trees are too close\big"
  10. I've known guys to use bike inner tube to keep prusiks in check. To avoid carabeena fury mid climb.
  11. Genetic variation in trees can mean that one 50yr old syc has smooth bark and another develops the characteristic plated bark early. Your tree is almost certainly a sycamore. I'm not aware of any bacterial cancer that effects sycamore. From your photos it just looks like normal Syc behaviour.
  12. Agree I love the idea of go-pro but not for tree climbing/cycling helmet mount sticks out a bit much for me. :what:
  13. I'm applying the "buy cheap buy twice" to too much stuff in my life but it is nice to have quality gear. The HDR-AS15 came with a massively over engineered waterproof housing which is what I wanted as it's rated to 60m!!! Which is hardcore in comparison. The more modern HDR-AS30v come with a lighter housing that is rated so something like 4m for 10min.

    Awesome thread! X torque?
  15. Depending on your desired use? Do u want to make and edit quality takedown video? If so buy sony/gopro/etc also make sure you have a decent Mac to edit the video. (windows is **** but not let's not get into that). If your just after capturing some random moments or more for political /dangerous trees then maybe something from Asia to just make fun clips. There are some quite worthy models if you know what not to buy! I can tell you that were you want to mount the camera is a big factor on what you should buy. I recently bought a Sony hdr-as15 as they came down in price after the release of the Hdr-as30v (Sony have such catchy names for their kit). As I cycle commute and wanted something to mount on the lid. Sony offer very few side mount options and I opted for the velcro/cable tie attachment method as it was difficult and didn't want to mount on my forehead like some gimp! Go pro offer the best diversity in mount options but the camera (face on) is quite cumbersome. If you want to see some British comparison of all the many mad Asia-cams look for "techmoan" on YouTube. I can highly recommend the Sony cameras though once you over come where you want to mount it. It's great. I'm pretty sure whatever you choose, an element of creativity will be required to attach to anything worth filming from.
  16. More findings from today Both unknown to me. First on LP, and second on HO. Gonna have a look when I get back to the Office.
  17. It was primarily lapsed sweet chestnut coppice with birch regeneration in open areas. I was collecting birch bark from fresh wind throw for making this. Thanks all for the replies super!
  18. Some kind of beetle crawled out of the foraged woodland goodies I've collected this morning. Wondered what kind of beetle it was. He's about 4mm long with crazy antennae bits. Hopefully there are some budding entomologists watching. O
  19. Found this while out today at a clients place. Wondered what the brown slime is? Seems to exist above bark and a couple of stabs suggest wood is sound.
  20. Awesome shots! is that a randomer? or the owner? tree seemed to be getting along ok without roots :-D maybe they're over rated?
  21. !! if its red data listed should I think about clever conservation things todo like dig up up the infected roots and plant them in a beech wood :-D If it is what you say it backs up the above ground evidence of significant root decay. shame really, the chap who spotted it after showing us insisted on having his lunch underneath it in his van.... wasnt really sure he got the "its really windy dont park here!" vibe i was giving off! what will be will be :-D Pending client acceptance of the quote I've already liaised with the tree officer to remove them as both TPOd. ill see if i can get some cross cut photos of the stem of the one with Kretchmaria. Fairly sure the only thing keeping them upright is a square weight! All in all quite an interesting day compared to hedges :-S
  22. Just dawned on me it's probably more meripilus! Lol
  23. Went to see two very sad beeches today. From my efforts I can see kretchmaria and meripilus doing their thing but not sure of the biscuity brown radially fin-like thing? And a little grey fella Possibly saprophytes cleaning up after the bad boys? Your thoughts welcomed
  24. What do you guys think. Leaves have a bristly texture the upper smooth beneath opposite budded with delicate pendulous flowers I'm told.
  25. When I snapped a section off it smelt fishy and was Black in the core as it degraded.
