  1. ditto that my neighbour has drawn all his plaans for his extension and got them passed with SKETCHUP Its all good and well using a drawing package for small scale TPO Aps etc and if your good you can get cad drawings sent to you in PDF, (by the client), then you can open the pdf. in Photoshop and add your tree points. This method could be inaccurate if working on a small site. Errors in the tree positions wrong could cause confusion and get on the wrong side if planning. It will also win you a bad Rep. 2. I second this, our timber wolf is doing. The same. We have a huge box of pre filters that we use and change every week. If your in a pinch and the filter blocks take it off and use a pen In its place untill a filter comes allong,(not recommended)
  3. Ah i see in the instance of mega-limbs, a staged removal would be ideal. but when "the customer is always right" many ppl dont want to wait years to have work done. and often esp on this economic climate the tree comes off worst.
  4. ?!! what is this? is it a tender? do we price. please advise
  5. I've also just remembered that there is another app that makes databases similar to this but is intended for wallets and litchis etc, try memento search for it on the Market place. I also use it to time manage my jobs and could be used to cost yourself to different contracts.
  6. It is rather cool. However I have just found one major issue. I just sat down and made an highly detailed bs5837 style template. And when loading it onto the software on my android nexus one. It crashes. With regard to accuracy, gaps is pretty much accurate to around 7m in open clear conditions. But is far more susceptible to interferance. For increased accuracy I use an old Bluetooth gps reciever that I soldered together with a huge capacity battery. This is a 48hr Bluetooth gps monster that I use in conjunction with viewranger on my jailed iPod,(un jailed iPods don't support Bluetooth gps). But that's another story. With a bluetooh gps receiver you still only get around 5-10m accuracy but is less susceptible to interferance. What we really need is an averaging script for this which take a measurement and works out an average over time. This is how companies like Trimble claim to have sub-meter accuracy, (this combined with land masts and differential correction)
  7. Yes I just made a sample DB and it looks quite good. huge scope to create a bespoke DB and collect the data. many would pay for this service! it's likely that where it will go in the future. :-( but very good app its also available for ipod/iphone
  8. all sounds fessable but allways be aware of IT types talking things up to be more than they are, im an IT type and its the constant rubbish that splurges from my mouth that confuses the hell out of people. im trying to learn to control it but sometimes i get excited using a trimble juno to export to shp is quite straigh forward. however i would recomend Manifold for the beginer GIS type. one may still 'query the data' but in a far more straight forward method. ArcView is serious software. and you could be at risk of buying 1000s of pounds worth of software to use but only a smidgen of its ability. I would say the simplest method: Juno+TrimbleTerraSync+GPS PAthfinder Office,(Desktop software to translate the trimble SSF files) +Manifold,(GIS tool). i love it!
  9. for those of you out there with Android powered smart phones search for Epicollect on the market place. its a powerful gps enables data collection utility could prove useful when batteries run out on Trimble or, (god forbid), you forget it altogether. EpiCollect.net
  10. As crazy as the bus idea is there is no question about it, its safer and there is no question about whether you need to take this branch or that. and like one of the other guys said zero set up time. Although i think your likely to look a bit *****. sound like Connick have the right idea although not sure that their vehicle is a financially viable in comparison to the fun bus approach. Still i think it's something that professional companies are apprehensive to adopt as a soloution as its a bit, well camp.
  11. Anybody ever heard of tree surgeons in an open-top bus, light crown lifting for the 6.5m required clearance on A-roads? obviously not M-roads. Apparently this is how it used to be done!. I'm looking to see if i can hire one from somewhere in sussex. then have a rolling road TM vehicle follow behind. Sounds crazy. I'm not sure its possible. Then again if its gonna happen it will happen in Sussex!
  12. On the contrary this is just the sort of "geek" talk, i want to see on this thread. keep it coming. Im familiar with interrogating a dataset to highlight items such as "show me all trees near powelines or within 4 mtrs of roads." this sort of efficient task management can optimise mobilisation of largscale, cyclic survey works. Nice!
  13. Excellent ill look into this method, sounds good. if you use Manifold you can import KML files and then export as CAD formats but i'm not sure if it maintains the attributes table.
  14. yes a combination depending on the task for larger durveys we export the raw data from the Trimble handhelds into .shp (esri shape file), then open in Manifold to finish off. For smaller surveys such as BS:5837 and smaller condition of safety surveys, we use auto cad as this is better suited to RPA's I'm just curious as to how others collect and manipulate their tree point data. There is almost an infinite amount of methods :-)
  15. Photos that are taken by a photographer with scope for composure, lighting and design can often look "artificial" just purely because they look so good. But i imagine looking the lighting, more than one light source was used or a sneak y trick to prevent shadowing from flash.
  16. hmm all good points i think with a topic so diverse as this involving people with extreme knowlege ranging down to almost none could cause some mega stress. I'm building a database on my android phone but it really is just a small project and non transferable to other devices other than android smartphones. This sort of thing needs a dedicated web site with sponsorship for server costs and maintenance/upkeep. Could be a really good idea if the right people were to take the reigns. but it all boils down to money and love the balance must be right.
  17. :edit:oops rubbish internet connection double post deleted..
  18. There needs to be some kind of interface similar to the fugal photo album bit on here and the ability to be given permission to contribute by mods. The only problem with getting everyone in on it would mean that it would either need reveiw every now and then or disclaimers like wikipedia. either that or a way of flagging infomation as incorrect.
  19. with specific refference to a "wound being to big to seal in the time frame" what do you mean? I have seen in many instance strong occluders like Platanus etc occulude rediculously large wounds. by time frame im guessing you mean, that by the time it has acheived complete occlusion significant exposure to moisture has occoured. in this instance i think the tree would again rely on its fail safes, (shigo's walls), some decay may begin to occour within that wound but it wont get far, (obviously this depends on species, conditions, resources and surrounding area). Trees live whitin far greater time-scales than our own, what to us could appear as 5 years of wet, open wound doing damage is barley a week in the life of a tree. And i bet that they are willing to 'sit out' the bad times
  20. When you see, for instance dead wood remaining on an oak, occulsion can be seen to be occouring but is not able to seal the wound completely due to the remaining obstruction. In this instance the tree will rely on the remaining fail safes which are Shigos 4 'walls'. In an ideal world the would would seal to prevent the entrance of moisture into the wound this as we often see in nature this doesn't always happen. i'm a firm believer in the fact that, as arborists/tree surgeons we can give the tree the best chance of sealing a wound quickly/efficiently by carrying out effective and professional finishing cuts.
  21. I cant get this to work on my version of XL what benifits are there is using this macro based XL sheet to calculate DBH?
  22. A picture paints a thousand words and all that. lets see it.
  23. Hi all, im interested to hear what software/hardware any tree consultants/surveyors on these forums are using At present we are using a set of Trimble recons running Trimble terrasync to collect data in the field. These are extremely rugged with immense battery life. We also use the Trimble GPS Pathfinder Office desktop Software as a means of converting the collected point/shape/line data into a format that we can use with autoCAD. This set-up is diverse enough for pretty much any survey except the very small, where data entry becoms counter productive. lets hear what you guys use and what you think?
