  1. All the ride on mowers I have ever used have been very unreliable never picked the grass up very akward to load and gain acsess to site usless turn circle takes ages to turn round. They get pucntures flat batterys blades bend when hit sticks. The cut is very poor too never got one cutting lower than 2.5 inches or 65mm without scalping the ground. There are only three advantages they are quicker than one walk behind mower this does not inclued buggering about witha trailer in the morning and you can sit down and you can put more of the grass that its actually picked up on the compost. I think 2 men and 2 21 inch mowers are quicker do a much better job stripe the lawn and are cheaper to run quicker to load easyer to store use less fuel too ride ons drink like fish very easy to work on. To be honest I have only tryed second hand cheaper end ride ons but they still work out more expensive than 2 walk behind mowers. But remember when you spend 3 or 4 grand ona ride on & trailer that would take me and my labourer many many miles behind 2 walk behind mowers so I still think thats the most effeciant and best way to cut grass!
  2. Hi I have gearbox failiure on my Honda UM 616 rough mower. Its hydrostatic I can not find any spaers on the internet or ever taken a hydrostatic gearbox to bits. Knowing Honda they will charge a fourtune for a new gearbox. If any one has experince or know where I can source parts for the hydrostatic drive or even know how much a new one is I would be very happy for a reply. Cheers Chris.
  3. I do lots of mowing and the best mower I have ever used is a pre 2000 hayter 56 with briggs and stratton side valve engine. Very simple very light very agile on banks and rough ground masive broad grass box cuting height adjustment simple quick and a big range exellent quality cut simple strong drive system with a big roller cheap parts and simple to fix if they brought it back the shelf i would buy one tomorrow. The only diss advantage is the engine is a sod to start and could do with a bit more power per wieght. My old one done so much work it was smoking like knackerd old two stroke rattling like a old diesel transit and drinking more fuel than a V8 range rover. I currently run a 2004 Honda 536 hh qxe it might be powerful and start first time and evern give quite a fine cut those are the good points. The bad points are parts very expensive the mower is not as reliable as a hayter the engine will go on for ever but I have bought more cables blades drive parts hayter make mowers honda make engines not mowers. Its very heavy not very well balanced either most weight is carried at the front. The worst point is the rear roller lots on ebay with this problem hayter win over honda any day here. The honda roller is very small and not ribbed or split like the hayter which makes it very hard to manover and the gearbox has a dog clutch which needs replacing at the end of every season which is ok the hayter drive parts will wear less cause the belt takes the stress but both need changing at some point however honda want over £150 for gearbox parts and when a new hayter is £999 and honda £1500 your lots beter off with a Hayter. I could talk all day about this point so I will Finish buy telling you in my shed i hava dead hayter cause of engine and a dead honda cause of 3rd gearbox on way out snapped P.T.O and roller worn down quite a few mm worn spline. New Briggs engine £350 New Parts for Honda probly more than £1500 lol. The new Hayters are spoesd to be awfull let us know you experiences im considering buying new one.
  4. I have my staffy with adhd come to work with me some big open jos I will let him run around he needs lots of exercise but I never let him lose with machinery he also gets a good run up the yard when unloading unfortunatly he hasa weekness for for feeline meat so an electric dog collar has been fitted which stops him very quickly. The worst culprits for lose animals are customers when opperarting the saw or the strimmer a terrier or collie jumping barking and bitting the moving parts should send alarm bells ringing but oh no he will bored in a minute yeah when his head gets ripped off. Do excuse the spelling im a little country simple!

  6. ut - oh thanks for your help guys I have made a mistake but at the same time learnt a valuable leson the hard way. I will say i had a good look on the international network with not much luck so this forum has been very useful and I am hoping the next guy pruning a walnut tree thinking itsa fruit tree reads this. Cheers Chris.
  7. I have pruned a walnut tree for a customer I pruned it much like a fruit tree I took all the rough long snaging branches off made a goblet shape and pruned new growth couple buds back. I did i a couple of weeks ago right in the middle of winter however it has been bleeding from the cuts and its been well bellow freezing so the sap has frozen and the tree looks like a giant icicle factory. The customer and I are now worreid that this will cuase damge I allways understood the winter was by far the best time to prune fruit and nut producing trees I am hopping somebody can tell me what the outcome of said walnut tree will be and the best way to prune it. Any help and sugestions will be very welcome .
  8. I run it over with honda 536 mower fited with a twin blade mulching kit then blow and bag. The mulching blade kits from honda are briliant for leaves they chop them up to the size of a grain of rice and its quick!

However in the winter this drys up and I never seem to have much to do I have been thinking about doing a chainsaw ticket I have seen tree surgeons working i dont think I would like to climb but ground work looks like my kind of fun so I have two questions. What do I need in terms of insurance, kit and tickets? How much work am I likely to find In this area and how long would the expence of the ticket insurance ect take to pay for its self?
