  1. We're just about in to early summer here Jon, pretty benign weather conditions. Been fairly wet recently but not too windy. .
  2. I don't think so Jon, the vein break is very uniform. it appears to be only on one third face of the canopy from ground to top roughly in a westerly direction. .
  3. I spoke with Forest Research yesterday and they are certainly intrigued. have just sent four samples down to Alice Holt for them to have a closer look. when I hear back I shall update....... .
  4. Something is interfering with or nipping the central vein of one (or two) of the palmate leaflets which appears to be shutting down and wilting the affected part(s). .
  5. came across an interesting disorder on a couple of horse chestnuts yesterday. I haven't seen this before & having had a close look at it can't seem to see evidence of 'who' is responsible. There's the obligatory presence (although light at this stage) of leaf mining from Cameraria ohridella but this isn't an associated symptom & there is no Guignardia leaf blotch in evidence. The leaves are wilted & almost completely retained on the tree with very few on the ground, but it could be that they just haven't shrivelled enough yet. Bird, insect....other? .
  6. not sure if I have seen it fruiting on standing dead trees of those species, Tony can't say that I've had a camera at hand every single time I've needed one. but on fallen 'dead/dysfunctional' lumps of ash, certainly more than once........see below. I tend to show the one from Whippendell because I happen to think its a good example of a specific fungal species at work on a dead as dodo piece of woody biomass showing its propensity to act as (amongst other things) a saprotroph. .
  7. Sad to hear that Jon, my thoughts go out to his family and colleagues. Agreed, crane work (from my relatively limited experience) is a factor of our industry that should always be planned and risk assessed & have little if anything left to chance. Like most things though, experience can often lead to a propensity for over confidence .
  8. Agent-Arb with a mid crane removal/half 'Bolt' lunge .
  9. thanks for that Jon. Cool shot, how many tonnes in that Euc? .
  10. Not at all saprobic isn't entirley accurate from what I've seen of Inonotus hispidus Tony. Although this instance (from whippendell woods) doesn't show that it was not already in the wood before it separated, it's obviously still active on a long time dead/dropped branch which says to me that at this stage of its life cycle it was saprobic. Saprobe "A saprobe is an organism that derives its nutrition from the dead remains of other organisms".
  11. Cheers Jon, and went pretty smoothly. No helmet footage of that pick, but it went straight up and away. 10 picks in all, a couple that were learning curves, a few went really smooth and the rest were the bits in between. out of interest, why wire rope & not chains? .
  12. Cheers, glad you got something from the vid. The videoing works two ways, both as a way of showing what we're up to but also as a constructive way for the team to appraise/review a technical job afterwards. as for tips, we're still learning. Just building on experience and equipmment and applying those two things when we get the chance even if we have to make that chance, all in the name of progressing our skill set. we played with the rigging idea in the yard a few weeks before and applied it on the job after a bit of tweaking. .
  13. Blimey O'Rielly, look what only goes and happens when you put 'Poplar' in to Arbtalk's search function It only goes and gives you info on the Poplar 'Hornet' moth http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/tree-health-care/41768-poplar-hornet-moth.html Who would of believed it .
  14. Cool, how was your operator? Ours was fairly new to tree work with a crane, but got up to speed pretty quickly. Having the helmet coms certainly helped .
  15. Delivered on a lorry Paul, did you see the vid on post 7 ? .
  16. Great little crane, ideal for tight....ish spots it says it can lift 6t at 3m out reach from up to 7m height The boom goes up to just over 19m and has an extension fly jib that can take the height upto 22.7m UNIC URW-706 .
  17. one thing I can't be accused of is not having patience 6 years on and we finally had a job worthy of hiring one in for............. .
  18. looks to me like an assignment for the Lev 4 diploma. I don't think you should be asking for the answers here personally, there's loads of reference/resource available on the web beyond the usual p&d books what does your gut instinct say that they are? .
  19. nice clear & steady vids, what did you use to film them? shame about the left index finger on the stump grinder one .
  20. one way is to select the video from you tube that you want, click the share button below it This address you can copy, then paste that in a post here at Arbtalk. failing this you tube have loads of videos showing you how .
  21. Chorisia speciosa perhaps .

  23. 2 years ago, but lost it as I can't remember which tree I embeded it in as I thought it was a ninja throwing star .
  24. Superb Reg, enjoyed that Your editing is unique and an art .
  25. having delved a bit deeper, it may possibly be the mines of a moth which is probabaly more common Eriocrania subpurpurella - UKMoths Lep:Eriocraniidae .
