    Dead oak

Well I cut it up today, bit of rot at the top end and some ring shake but overall not bad. Did a deal with the farmer so not cost me anything other than my time.

    Dead oak

That's what I wondered. I decided to leave them to firewood up the stem as it had to be done quickly and access was awkward. I'll see if I can have the roots later

    Dead oak

Thanks for the replies, some food for thought. So far I've been sourcing all my timber from my tree surgery work or for free in exchange for help as suggested, unless I've got an immediate use our buyer for it. It's always painful the thought of potentially good timber going for firewood however!

    Dead oak

I've been offered the chance to buy a dead oak that's blown over in a field to mill. I've recently bought a lucas mill with slabber attachment and have an alaskan and 880 with 3ft bar. The tree is about 2ft diameter and 14ft to where the first branches are. It looks like its been dead quite a while. The roots have rooted away but left a lovely looking root ball. What sort of money should i be offering for the wood? I'd probably mill into 2 inch through and through, seems too good for the firewood pile
  5. I think he has been
  6. Scored 2 against QPR today (sorry thought this was a football thread!)
  7. Good to know there's a jensen dealer not to far away. Where abouts in Wiltshire are you? I think a fluid change is long overdue I'll check what grade I've got
  8. Throttle not slipping revs are full. Ran fine after it had warmed up more today. I'm going to change fluid and filter hopefully that will sort it. Based in somerset
  9. Just replaced spur gears on 2005 model. Has worked fine for 2 days but now is struggling to move rollers round. Hydraulic motor is not leaping into life very quickly and struggles on easy stuff making the engine labour. Level of fluid is ok. Any ideas? Pump or motor problem possibly?
  10. I got mine done when I bought it. Hadn't driven it loaded before so can't tell you what the difference was, but it pulls up a hill with a chipper and full of chip considerably better than other same model transits I've driven.
  11. Whereabouts? Green or dried? I've got a large Oak I will be milling soon in Somerset
  12. Redwood are still jensen dealers
  13. Have sent you a pm
  14. Rupert at land logic has a mobile wood mizer. Alternatively I have a Lucas Mill with 1.5m cut slabber attachment
  15. It was £2500. It's off a friend. I Rang him up to talk to him about looking at the mill in Dunoon and he'd just installed a shiny new bandsaw and wanted some money back from his lucas. I think £4000 is a good price nevertheless. Well worth a look and probably had a lot less use than the one I've just bought by the sound of it
  16. I saw it advertised on wood lots and spoke to him the other day about it. He seemed pretty genuine and I would have gone up and checked it out but I found one down this way (I'm in Somerset but Mill is in Devon) quite a bit cheaper. Going to pick it up tomorrow!
  17. I've got some Lawsons coming down next week near shepton. Should be something bid enough there of That's any good for you
  18. Should read where it clamps to bar
  19. Got back on it today. Sharpened chain again and removed burrs. Took saw off Mill and cleaned up where it clamps top bar. Replaced a u bolt that was bent. Put saw back on being careful to tighten bar clamp evenly and it cut like a dream. Incidentally noticed that there are spacers on the front bar clamp but not on the chainsaw end one?
  20. I did wonder if it was something to do with the bark I thought I was gonna rip through it fairly quick. I milled a thuja a few weeks ago and had no problem with it
  21. Took the rakers down to correct depth. I'll try again and make sure I take the burrs off next time. It was painfully slow today and chain/bar getting hot cutting at full width with 36" b+c
  22. I was milling a big thuja butt today and the chain seemed to be dulling really quickly. I'm sharpening using the granberg precision grinder which I've been using for a while and generally just tickling a bit off the chain to keep it sharp. The chain cuts well in hardwoods so I think I'm getting the angles right just can't work out why it was cutting so badly today. I did forget to take the burrs off the cutters after sharpening I've never really thought it makes much difference but I can't think of another reason for the chain going blunt as the wood was pretty clean. :what:
  23. Can anyone recommend a good supplier of 1m3 vented bags (with tipping loops on the bottom) Cheers
  24. I think the shaft was about £90 +vat. Would've been about £25 from engineers although I don't know about suitable tolerances/temper. I had trouble dropping the shaft assembly out because the mounting lug for one of the tension cable pulleys is in the way. We broke the triangular bearing casing to get it out but the new bearing will come with one. Sent from my GT-I9300 using Arbtalk mobile app
  25. I did mine recently. Is yours the open spur gear model? The most difficult part is getting the roller off the shaft I took mine to a local engineers who couldn't shift in in the press. They ended up drilling it out. I'd already ordered a new shaft from redwood, but could have brought one from the engineers for a fraction of the cost. Don't forget to take the opportunity to sharpen the teeth on the roller whilst its out.
