When I worked there the policy was to save what you could until it became too 'high' risk to the public. The inspections were rigorous as you can imagine at out national arboretum but I remember shadowing a good friend and he showed me plenty of trees affected by fungi that were managed sympathetically until the 'rot' became too much of a risk. Monoliths are ever present and fencing off of veterans is common practice to retain the tree but keep the public out. If you have not been Rob you should make it a pilgrimage one day!

Did anyone else exert themselves this weekend? I ran the Great South Run this morning in a respectable 1hr 22mins for charity! Not bad for an old bloke...just interested to see what like-minded active people get up to in their spare time!

Like soup! I did some work at Westonbirt in my youth and am still in contact with a number of guys up there so on Monday I am going to ask what the extent of the damage was, how many PICUS readings they took before they were certain that they would not make an ar** of themselves on national TV. I am also going to ask how far up the stem it went too. Got any nagging thoughts trooper and I will ask away on your behalf.

I am unsure if you 'overseas' chaps can get on to BBC i-player but the Autumnwatch programme n Friday showed the results of the use of PICUS before and after a Beech with Ganoderma sp was felled. Interesting clip!

Getting back on track. I did see it and was interested to see the results. We use the PICUS at work and on another thread the question has been asked on its reliability, use, and feedback. The clip from Westonbirt would certainly answer some critics?

Agree entirely with you Rob. I noted the reference to berries but sometimes the acorns are so tightly implanted within the cup that they could be misconstrude as berries - just a thought

It could be Quercus ilex (Holm Oak) as the leaves do have the 'spikes' when immature. Look for acorns - they will be tiny so look carefully.

How do you know these things when you can't even see the whole tree? Yes it has a cavity on the reverse of the picture, not very big but it is significant in my report

I do not disagree with you , I was merely outlining an analogy to make it simple to understand (to those not in the business). No malice or disrespect intended - I couldn't do a tree surgeons job and have never inferred to anyone that I could - very skilled professionals in my opinion

I am sure we had this discussion some time ago and I related a trre surgeon and arborist to that of a surgeon and consultant in the medical field - all made sense to me then and still does now?!

Gerrit, I remember having a conversation with you regarding woodpeckers and brown rot fungi. You may find this a coincidence but at the time I thought of the relationship and tried to narrow it down to what fungi it could be. You see my friend your teaching is being soaked up - thank you -
I looked in to this. They are very reasonable but they have very strict rules you must adhere to. For example, the management, no buildings, public access if already exists etc etc. I went to a woodfair and listened to them for an hour. Very tempted as you can use it a sustainable wood for yourself or make a profit too. Depends on location and the past management of course.

Hey that is a good one. Did you peel it to get that much glow through the skin? I wanted the scar on mine to just glow through but in the end carved directly through the pumpkin as the glow wasn't effective enough
