Tree of heaven. Ailanthus altissima.

Nice little tree. Given the location and the first hit when you Google it I'll bet the owners paid a small fortune for it from Architectural Plants.
It's a well established tree Jon, don't think it's gone in recently.
Probably should have had a better look about might have found some other treats.

lyonothamnus floribundus.
Just cant help myself.
Cheers Matt, I'd hoped your curiosity might get the better of you.
Was it an internet find or from a book?

It's cardboard, anyone fancy another crack at the tree? 🙂

no more beautiful than common trees - they just wanted something no one else has
Thanks for that, do you know what it is though?

Not like any mimosa I've seen before and too big to be the fern, it's an evergreen and looking mature at about 6 meters.
Didn't have my phone on site but the bark and branch form are pretty much Arbutus unedo, not familiar with any other arbutus but think that's most likely.

That must have been a task and a half. I reckon this tree is also at least 3m at ground level so maybe similar age. There was a huge manor house on the site which burned down early last century so I'm told. The remaining gardens are still very impressive, lots of veteran trees.

I was relatively green at the time, I can remember the climber up there taking the limbs off with a 066 and lumps fling off as he crashed it down.
There's a video somewhere of the butt going over, prob on vhs.

No guesses? It's a Liriodendron (tulip tree). Anyone seen a larger one in the UK? This must be amongst the oldest and largest. Amazing Tree, pics don't do justice

I helped in the removal of one in dorking 20 Ish years ago, it was about 3m diameter at ground level as I recall.
We thought at the time it was one of the original 7 that were imported, no idea if that's true but it was massive.

"Dentata" I believe.
No hope with yours mind.

MattMoss what's your secret?! I'm very impressed; how did your operate an investigative trail to ID this thing?
Still have every faith in me Kev?!
Ha ha yep, I'm sure you'd have got there in the end. There's another above to test your skills though, should be a bit easier.

There's also the single seed bit.
I'd kinda hoped they'd get a bigger sample

Can't rule out eleagnus but I'm pretty confident it's not ebbingei.
No thorns or dust and leaf too small.

Google image doesn't work on the phone Jon.
Didn't work on it myself but the lack of angry looks, swearing and blood tells me no thorns.

We reduced this yesterday so thought I'd give it a little bump.
Anyone got fresh ideas??

Can anyone tell me if species have to be mentioned on a preservation order?
I know they have to get the species right if they put it on but is simply putting "deciduous tree" sufficient?
Seems a bit shabby to me.
