  2. This is a fair point and one which i have considered, my gut feeling is to tell them not just from a public safety point but also to prevent the fungii migrating on to the Oaks on either side. I guess i'll chance my arm, and if they think i'm going to offer to tarmac their drive as well then that's up to them. I'll sleep soundly, and take a different route home in future! Thanks all.
  3. Was on my way home a couple of days ago and saw this on an Oak by the roadside. 5 fresh brackets of laetiporus sulphureus? The brackets range in size form quite large towards the top and somewhat pathetic at the base. Further inspection of the ground there was the remnants of the previous years brackets. There's 2 other mature Oaks on either side, one of which has wounds all over the place but is not showing any brackets or other signs of disease. Question is do i doorstop the owners of the property and inform them of the fungii and of the potential hazard (the tree's got quite a bias over the road) it presents? Or is that just plain necky and unethical? Would be a good job with potential for repeat business. What would you do?
  4. Thanks everyone. Will see what the client wants to do and take it from there. Regards
  5. Thanks all for your help! How did the pruning go plippy? I've read that as palms a quite fibrous they're not the easiest to cut?
  6. Brilliant, thought as much, thanks very much for the help. One last question. Is there a specific season when to prune Palmae?
  7. Guys, Here's some pictures of what i think is a Cabbage Palm from my ident book. As you can see it's starting to die back on a couple of branches and one has completely died. The client wants to save it if possibe. Questions: 1. Can anyone positively identify it? 2. What's wrong with it? 3. Would it respond to having the deadwood cut out and the dying pruned out? I'm thinking prune it, see how it responds then if continues advise the client remove and replant? Any help greatly valued. Regards. Mick
  8. Brilliant! Hey don't want to derail but being as this site is a resource to arbs what would be the chance of the same for fungii and rarer tree ident?...discuss?

  10. I believe It's about your ability to listen, learn and assimilate new skills. It's about attitude to criticism and advice. Age is irrelevant, who is to say who will be better in years to come a 22 year old when he reaches 27 or a 40 year old when he reaches 45? I'm 42 have just started out after 24 years in the Marines. I am as fit as people half my age and have no fear of risk (physical or business risk) it is just my attitude to it that has changed with age and life experience. I am not the quickest and have no desire to be, i do have a desire to learn all i can from all who can teach, old or young. I do have a determination to be the best that i can be. If that means i have to stay on the ground dragging whilst i watch and learn from a 20 year old then so be it! But knowledge dispels fear and the more you do the more you learn to push the envelope without injury to yourself or your professional reputation. To quote: "Technique and ability alone do not get you to the top; it is the willpower that is the most important. This willpower you cannot buy with money or be given by others..it rises from your heart" Junko Tabei-1975 after becoming first woman to climb Ever

  12. Hi,

I'm interested and available at the minute. I'm based in East/Dorset Hants border but more than happy to travel for an opportunity like this.

I have CS30,31,32,38,39 and 41. Chipper and grinder tickets, own saws, full climbing kit, insurance and some rigging gear.

Been looking for an opportunity as a second climber as i've only been climbing trees for 6 months but rock climb so heights not a problem. Just left the Royal Marines after 24 years, i work hard in all weathers and listen to what i'm taught.

Please call if i'm any good to you?

    Regards

  15. Hi, I have CS30,31,32,38,39 and 41. Grinder and chipper tickets. Pre 97 licence. PLI, Full PPE, Climbing kit, Saws and some rigging kit. Looking for part time/sub contract work. Fairly new to arb work looking to increase my experience and contacts in the area. Hence selling myself as second climber but am fit and confident at height. Work hard and learn quickly. Thanks for reading Regards Mick
  16. Where abouts in Wiltshire are you?
  17. Hi, Probably a little off thread here, but it's in the same vein..............i think! I'm new to arb work and although in the past 5 months i have accquired quite a few tickets, I realise that with my experience i'm not going to be able to earn too much. I have a bit of cash to spend so my question is this..............is there any mileage in trying to hire myself out as a second climber/groundie complete with chipper, tipper and a place to dump chip and logs? As i think this might help cover the gap between experience and earnings? Appreciate your thoughts!
  18. Hi, sent you an e mail yesterday, don't know if you got it? Basically i've got all the quals and attributes that you need, just don't have much experience but i learn fast and work hard!
