  1. The idea of the flat rate was to put me on a level playing field with other non vat registered arb firms. I have found that i don't seem to win as much work as before vat registered but its not made that much of a difference as i was previously worried about.

I think that some folk just want work doing for nowt it does'nt matter if there's vat on top or not.

  2. Vat update...being great so far as I have bought lots and lots of new gear and have claimed just over 10 grand back, on the downside now I have stopped buying and am starting to save I am just playing tax collector for hmrc.

I do tend to feel like wasting my time with some jobs as the extra 20% is outpricing us. I am now looking into the flat rate scheme which I believe is a fixed 12%.

  3. We seem to be producing more and more firewood every year as a by product of tree surgery, i am trying to streamline the firewood side to increase efficiency & reduce man handling.

This year we will have produced around 200 cube of hardwood all processed by hand, the oversize stuff is usually ringed up & broke down via vertical splitter smaller stuff on saw bench then straight into ibc's.

Ideally i would like 1 machine to split over size stuff & cut & split lengths, maybe load with a mini digger & grab :confused1:

Does such a machine exist? i am open to any other way of doing things.

  4. We've just changed the flywheel bearings and reckon the cut out on the bearing housing is to undo the grub screws, freeing it from the shaft.

In the words of forst "it appears to be a manufacturing error" they have fixed it pretty quick sharp, arranged collection and delivery & offered a stand in machine. Really good service I must say, just cant help thinking someone on the production line did that on purpose because they knew it was not right! If I had someone like that working for me I would sack them!!!

  5. In response.

The original post was a bit more than an enquiry as to whether anyone else had noticed this issue.

It was a high octane moan about build quality before you had even talked to the manufacturer.

It wasn't right, and they are sorting it.

It's a bit like a client bitching on Facebook about some work you had done before giving you a chance to come back and fix it.

If they'd denied it or tried to weasel out of it in some way I would completely understand.

    Anyway, happy ending.

Your a mile off mick, and in all honesty I wouldn't have done a **** job in the first place, next time we do some decking I will just bang fixings in anywhere, if customer notices I suppose I will have to fix it.

  6. To their credit they are collecting the machine to look into the issue, i have asked to loan a machine to which they are sending 1 up :thumbup1:

I am not moaning i am on here asking if anybody else has had the same issue, there is a difference, i am the first 1 to say how good the machine and redwoods backup have been before i noticed the bearing! if id of known i couldn't ask a question on a public forum i wouldn't have posted

  7. So what are the issues with the st8? I demoed one the other day and was very impressed. I don't want a lemon though.

As far as the washer goes, what's the big deal, cutting a washer is fine if it needs to fit round a flange or something. And I suspect the bearIng issue is due to the fact that the early bearings had problems and the newer design is a beefier unit and had to be modified to fit.

So out of 2 washers that hold the hopper on 1 is a small round washer that fits perfectly and the other is clearly too big and has being cut, why not put the same as the other side on? You cant seat the hopper correctly when lifting I on and off which is ****! I've lived with that for over a year, the point I am making is why cut corners? The machine is a newer tr6.

  8. Sounds good, your turn to come down south though.

There was a period a month or two ago where both my new truck and new chipper were out of action at the same time. The truck with a faulty exhaust sensor, and the chipper with a mysterious roller stopping problem.

So I was driving around in the tranny with the TW on the back thinking "I bought new stuff to avoid just this sort of thing,"

All sorted now, as long as we can keep working and earning, that's the main thing.

Sounds like me with the handbrake binding on a van with 100 miles on it.

  9. Simon I think your right to bring up these issues. Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuut in the chipper manufacturers defence ( all of them ) they are not producing high volumes of these machines and are probably aware of most of these silly avoidable mistakes, given time they will probably dial out a lot of these engineering fubars. We are running five different makes of chipper and I could pick holes in all of them , that said by and large they all get the job done.

    Bob

I dont agree with all of that bob, in my mind there's no way this bearing is meant to be like it is. If its not right dont send it out! If you pruned a tree and didn't use finishing cuts would you just leave it anyway? Reputation is built on quality not "it will do".

I know stuff needs ironing out in manufacturing, I purposely waited until they had being out over a year to avoid the lemons, if its **** why not fix it then send it out.

  10. Admittedly I have an st8 and I have a couple of niggles.

But really? Your machine works fine, a cut off washer and a bearing holder that may or may not be right, and you're on here mithering without even seeing if it's standard.

You have a warranty I presume?

I am asking if anybody else has the issue with the bearing, and yes it's still in warranty.

I've seen hundreds of pillow bearings on farm machinery and have never seen one with a jagged edge chipped off before.

Does your st8 have lump knocked out of the pillow bearing?

It's not a case of its working fine it's a case of what's acceptable on a 30 grand plus machine.

  11. I've no experience of the machines but have heard similar stories on Facebook such as throttle cables being held in place by cable ties to keep costs down(?) and one chap had the hydraulic system blow pipes on its first day

Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk

Hydraulic hoses I would assume they don't manufacture on site and are just 1 of those unlucky things. But the things I have pointed out are ridiculous.

  12. There is human error which I accept, but there is also quality control to combat human error! Think it was 34 grand, that's a lot of money so why send it out like it is? The side cover and washer is no big deal even though the washer makes it a pita to get the hopper on and off! But the bearing in am not impressed with. If the original one goes kaput how the he'll do you fit a replacement? Break another bit off
