  1. Just got my Mini Mill - not used it yet, I will keep you posted.
  2. Well here is some of our Oak almost fully sticked! run out of the little blighters, need to cut some more, quite a pile - there are three more (not stacked so high).
  3. Agreed a good eye helps! But what we have found it that we take a load of various wedges and use these to stop the ladder bending into the trunk, also we use a load of 'feather edge' cut offs to push into the cut as we progress down the log - seems to work for us.
  4. Here goes! Here is some of the Oak we have been milling - the first picture shows the 3" plank ready to be lifted off the remaining stump and the second one of 4 piles of planks before they have been sticked.

    Phew!

Well we have finally finished milling the Oak tree I have been discussing here, the milling went fine (3 chains now blunt and waiting for us to sharpen them), but moving what we had cut! All I can say is wet oak is bloody heavy!
  6. As most of you know I have been milling some Oak, the pieces we have cut so far have had a shake in the middle of the tree about 4 - 6" in length. My question is how do you deal with shakes? I have turned the tree (baulk) until we cut parallel with the shake, this way we are getting perhaps two boards that have the shake in the middle, these can then be cut in half. Is this the correct method. Brian
  7. you still looking at selling the Husky 2101XP
  8. Did try and post pics, but the old 10 min rule had me! So here goes, first one is Martin who I mill timber with and the other is some of the Oak we cut.
  9. We have been milling some Oak with our Alaskan and 44" Granberg Bar, yesterday was very productive (nice weather), we had to clear some ground to get at the tree. We cut two sections just over 6' long as the tree predicted this, we planked this in 1 1\4" and 2" thickness (gate project). Yesterday we used a Granberg ripping chain and found this to be faster cutting than the Oregon ripping chain that we used today. Again today we had to cut a 6' length off the tree to mill and almost managed to complete this before the heavens opened, we cut all this into 1 1/2" thickness (all wood is almost 2' wide). We are having some real nice pieces of Oak off this tree with quite a lot showing the medullary rays - from now on we should get our 8' lengths as recommended on here (Rob D and BigJ). Will get some pictures up of our efforts just need to upload them off my iPhone. Thanks for all the advice.
  10. What are you using to seal the end grain of your milled wood.
  11. Okay then its 8' - loads there so its no problem. Thanks guys.
  12. Up until now I have been cutting it rather thick up to 4" for wood turning - will have a load of oak in a few weeks, also have a very large Sweet Chestnut to cut and mill! New bar I think, its 5'+ dia, a huge tree that has seen better days.
  13. Alec Was going to cut it into about 6' lengths, but I'll take on board the 2.75" thickness. Brian
  14. Again thanks for all the very informative replies. Well I been to see the landowner and he was please that it can be cut into boards and not go for firewood - offered him some of the sawn boards as payment! I measured the tree tonight and its 2 ft- 2 1/2 ft in dia and there's not a branch for 40', plus loads of other useable wood after that. I have decided that I'm not going to quarter it, I'll just plank it perhaps up to 2 1/2" with some 1 1/2" boards. I'll also cut some of the more interesting bits for my bowl turning. Its a shame no one locally is looking for a really long oak beam! I'll have to post some pictures of my progress over the next few weeks. I need to get a spare chain for the 44" bar, a call to Rob in the morning as I can't seem to find one on-line on his site.
  15. Thanks for the reply's - they do make sense to me (really), I have a 44" double ended bar with the 'helper handle' and this really works a treat. Need to see the landowner before the dull bugger cuts it up for logs!
  16. Hi All these winds have brought down quite a large Oak, I need to see the owner of the woods but I might be able to convince him to let me 'plank' some of it. My question is have anyone here ever quarter saw any Oak with an Alaskan Mill, if so how did you go about it. Brian
  17. I have been milling timber with my Husky 2010XP and an Alaskan Mill, put a 42" GB on it yesterday and it loved using it, my question is what is the maximum size bar this saw would run in the Alaskan mill.
  18. Milled some Sycamore today, the first piece was a nice pure white, the piece nearest the ground had a lovely brown 'heartwood' so I decided to take a picture of it to post here, cut it 3" thick. Some of the other pieces had a bigger band of brown, great looking timber. What is the price of 3" Sycamore these days.
  19. I got one (and one for a mate) work great, sharpened 2 chains and really does the trick! Go get one if there's any left. Sharpened a chain (72 links) in less than 5 mins that was really blunt - like new now.
  20. I have been offered an opportunity I think is far too good to mis - someone I know as offered me some large oak to mill, he wants to see my mill working and has offered me all the oak that I cut! So I looking forward to using it for the first time, its fitted with a Husqvarna 2101 XP with a 36" Oregon bar and matching ripping chain, I'm up for the task and I hope all goes well. I have attached a picture of my homemade mill, its a little on the heavy side - cuts 28" with the 36" bar.

Here are the pictures of my attempts at milling wood!
  23. Never milled timber but have cutting loads this year that could easily be milled due to its size! My question is I was thinking of buying a 36" Alaskan Mill - does this run a 24" bar or should I get a 24" Mill. I want to see how I get on milling up to 20" first and then perhaps by a bigger bar to go up to 36".
  24. Does anyone here clean/sweep their own chimney/flue? I have a 6" liner fitted to a 'Stovax' stove, the flue now need cleaning/sweeping what do you recommend, purchase some rods and brush or get someone to clean it?
  25. Well it was well dead standing and has been drying for a few months, I'll put a moisture meter on it and check, but I'm not that happy with it at the moment.
