I have been a member on AT for around 5 years and in that time have spent a lot of time on here, in that time i have learnt some interesting things and have made some good contacts that i still do jobs for. But recently it just seems to be going around in circles, what saw should i buy, what truck should i get, how much are you selling wood for etc etc etc. I have been in the industry for over 20 years and have had experience in most aspects from commercial forestry to turf laying, I am not saying that i am an expert but i do know my way around a chainsaw and tractor. It seems there are a lot of young guys on here that hang on the words of the "senior members". I didn't know until recently, that all you need to do to become a senior member is post a certain amount of post, so i could come on here and post lots of posts about rubbish then become a senior member, then some college lad comes on here ask a question then this "senior member" answers his question and the lad would think it was gospel. I mentioned earlier that i have had some work from the site but i have also had some complete wastes of time and money and that was from a "senior member". Anyway enough of my rantings as the mods will probably take this down before it gets put up. Stay safe and don't take everything you read on here as gospel:thumbup:

liam replied to normandylumberjack's topic in Large equipment
That is really nice and very rare i would think, got to be worth well over 5k! -
I was working with someone the other day who had a new pair, and they were also falling apart, and they also had trouble changing the spikes.

Hi chipper have you tried getting in touch with RJM trees they are often hiring and based in exeter, and they also work away alot so all you need do is get there first thing monday and they would provide digs for the week, they work all over the country, mainly commercial, network rail-highways etc chris jenkins is the contracts manager, might be worth a try:thumbup:

I think as long as you are fit, strong and healthy then age doesn't matter. I have seen guys in there early 50's still climbing at a very good standard.

Hi Stephen, i had thought about scaf planks but thought they might not last, but 12 years sounds good to me, i hadn't thought about kitchen work top, thats a very good idea, i will be on the look out. thanks liam:thumbup:

Hi i was after a few ideas of what people thought the best wood for a workbench would be, i have just built a new shed and have moved my old workbench in but it really needs a new top, i have taken the old top off, and it has a really sturdy metal frame which i have painted so a nice new timber top would be ideal. I have got an chainsaw mill so could mill most things, i have a lot a larch which i planked last year, would that be good or would it splinter too much? i have also got some blue cedar a bit of elm and lots of ash. it's not going to have anything really heavy on it just saws, mowers etc. cheers liam

Here is a picture of a long tailed tit, the feeder was hung in front of kitchen window, they came around most days, usually about 6 of them, this picture was taken at the end of last winter, we have moved since, not had long tailed in new garden just normal selection

I have been using it for over 10 years, when i was working in the woods the harvester we were winching out for was running on it, so i thought if it is good enough for a £250k machine it's good enough for my £500 chainsaw, have never had any trouble but as mentioned before it can gunk up a bit.

Dorset/Devon Style a little different again
liam replied to Dorset Hedgelayer's topic in Hedgelaying
Hi, if you are interested in a course get in touch with the blackdown hills hedge association. they run courses every month. and are all very experienced with a number of national champions. if you could get a group of experienced people together they might do a more advanced course. i could ask next week as i am working with a few of them for a couple of months. cheers liam ps i think a sub site would be a good idea -
Good to see that there are a few hedge layers on here. i do a lot of devon style normally a couple of miles a year, my record was 7 miles one year ,back in the days when farmers were getting big grants but that seems to have faded now, mostly doing large gardens and small holdings but the work is starting to get slower. have done a few comps, got placed 3rd in the devon hedge group last year and won the blackdown hills hedge comp in my class. our parish lengths man live next door to me, it seems like a very interesting a varied job. great business name:thumbup:
