  1. can anyone tell me what fungus this is? There were a few bodies like this one on a silver birch which has died.
  2. Cheers. When I learnt to climb we were taught to use both ends of rope with either prusik or blakes. I've since starting using one end of rope with the flip line but may get a rope lanyard too perhaps 5 to 7m length. However I've recently been doing a bit more recreational climbing and find the two ends of rope very useful especially in bigger trees than I would normally be working in.
  3. No the 25m rope is my mainline connected to main bridge via prussik. I use the 3m flip line on side ds to secure when throwing mainline up to next branch. If I got a positioning rope lanyard instead of flip line would use this off side ds or anchor bridge?
  4. I'm mainly doing small medium tree works. At the moment I have a 25m and 37m rope. With the 37m i use both ends of rope plus a 3m steel flip line when chogging down. The 25 used most often - smallish take downs/reductions. On small stuff i use the 25 and 3m steel flip line on side ds on willans harness. However I've recently heard you shouldn't hang off the side Ds? If I get a lanyard 5m positioning strop would this be used off the side Ds or main anchor bridge.
  5. 21 k a year sounds pretty good to me. Only requires a level 2 qualification and a few nptcs which can be done in less than a year. A newly qualified teacher starting out only gets a fraction more than this but requires level 3 qualifications ie a levels plus a degree plus a pgce. A total of 6 years more training. 21k very fair for level of qualification required for post.
  6. What would the figure of eight option be?
  7. Thanks that's what I was after. My friction device is just a prussik so not sure how easy it would be to climb back up on . I think this running bowline as a backup to flip line when spiking is now part of npt c cs38 or 39 ? Cheers
  8. If you tie a running bowline into your climbing line and use the loop to choke the stem would the idea be not to clip back into your termination knot/eye? Would it be possible /safe to descend like this if required in emergency?(static line).
  9. when spiking on a pole during a dismantle is there a way of choking the climbing line so that it will grip the pole should you slip off spikes. I currently use a steel core flip line on both side ds and have my main climbing line around the stem just below. However I feel if slip out spikes my climbing line/flip line wouldn't grip the stem sufficiently to prevent a fall. Ive heard of people using a running bowline on there climbing line to choke the stem. Could someone explain this method?
  10. Thanks for the replies . Will the shoots that get cut off re-shoot or is the idea that the cuts will heal over and then new shoots form from another area on the pollard head? When creating a pollard from a a tree that hasn't been pollarded is it essentially a lop and top ? if so what stops rot setting in from cuts not made at usual pruning points such as taking back to a lateral branch in a reduction or removing whole branch to branch bark ridge?
  11. Hi When re-pollarding a tree which has established pollard heads how tight should you cut the growth/shoots back to the old head? I have seen some people leave small stubbs and others right back to where the shoot left the pollard head. When I did my NCH arb course we covered alot on reductions (back to a lateral branch) but not so much on pollarding from what I can remember. thanks Jon
  12. I agree its annoying when you dont get a response from a quote but then again do you email back when you get quotes for work, vehicles etc? My normal approach is if I haven't heard back with a few days I will give a quick call or email to see if they got the quote and had any thoughts on it.
  13. I dont think all customers are just looking for the cheapest quote. Some are but not all. Some may go for large companies that have been established for a long time and are well known - these companies may be charging more that 2 man outfits who have only been going for year or two. They are probably equally capable of doing the job to the same standard but the customer feels more comfortable using a well know firm and is happy to pay extra. Other customers may prefer using one or two man bands. Some customers will only get the one quote and go with your quote because they feel its a reasonable price, have had good recommendations, like who you are etc etc.
  14. Thanks guys . I'll replace the bridge (15 quid on buxtons) and use locktite to stop bolts coming undone. I'm going to cut the old bridge open and see what the construction is for future piece of mind. The material attachments on either end which attach the bridge to the bolts look so thin and strange if they are just stitched onto the ticker bridge material. I find the tape soon comes off protecting this stitching and its then vulnerable to getting damaged.
  15. Hi I have a komet dragonfly 2 which im thinking of replacing the bridge on as the stitching on both ends looks tired. 2 questions: 1. If replacing - do the bolts for both d ring attachments need to be sealed with melted plastic to stop coming undone/unscrewing over time? 2. The stitching on either end looks as it stitches a kevlar type material to the thicker bridge material. Is this correct or does the thinner kevlar material pass all the way through the middle of bridge with the thicker material covering which would seem safer? Hope that makes sense and someone can help! cheers
  16. Hi just wondered if a freelance directory exists for tree workers and if not what people think about the idea for example if you required a climber / groundsman for the day for a particular job you could search say within 10 miles of you, find out their experience, day rate, qualifications, equipment available -own saws etc and contact details. i think it would be very useful
  17. I imagine someone has calculated the average breaking strain for a certain diameter of each species. (for example green oak of x diameter loaded in the middle of a one meter span would require on average x Newtons of force to fail). I seem to remember that there is average data somewhere based on fractometer data I guess we are generally anchoring into the branch collar where I imagine the breaking strain is huge for most healthy trees.
  18. is there a table or calculation you can use to find the breaking strain/strength of green wood?
  19. A quick question about the hitch climber. I recently brought one to enable me to slack tend the friction hitch for a faster climb. I find the the hitch climber setup quite bulky compared with a prusik and one krab and was thinking of using a micro pulley behind the prusik to do the same job as the hitch climber. If would seem that this would be simpler and less bulky but are there disadvantages to this? Advantages of the hitch climber over a micro pulley?
