    bats in trees

on the course we did in the evening we went out with bat detectors and they took us to a tree roost they knew of with noctule bats in. i was amazed at how far up the crown the holes were. it was a small stunted looking ash in a hedge row and i guess the branch in question would be 6-8 in wide. and they had seen over 20 bats come out on another occasion.

    bats in trees

thats more like the kind of debate i was after i agree that in our profession the bats message is getting through but its when we have to put the message forward to the client that worries me do you still expect to be paid if you cant compleet the work do you expect the client to pay extra for ecologists, disturbance licences. etc. its all well and good knowing what you cant do but it dosent stop someone else doing it (cowboys are everywhere) then me and the bats lose out

    bats in trees

so far we have found 3 deffinate roosts one of which i found only one of the three was found with the ecologist but if i hadnt done the training i might not have known the course i did was with a company called echoes ecology and i cant think of the exact title but it was bats in trees surveying techniques and it was a three day course and two evenings trapping and echoe locating obviously we didnt work on the trees with roosts in.

    bats in trees

no you miss understand me the law and best practice are fine im saying that the use of independent ecologists presents problems to the arborist and the client i.e the client wants rid of the tree (normally as cheaply as pos) we want to do the work within the law and best practice the ecologist wants to do their job etc. etc. im interested in how other people have found ways to make the whole thing work hence the example of what we have been doing working with ecologists

    bats in trees

hi all I wanted to hear if anyone else had had involvement with bats or surveying for bats(in trees) as in the past two years our company has been on jobs where we have had to work with ecologists to survey the trees first before any work can commence. three of us have since done training and we now subby to one ecology company when they need climbers and have been training thier staff so they can access the tree if we find anything. this aside it still strikes me as a lot of trouble so has anyone any thing to say on the subject.
  9. probably but the old dear will be happy her car, garage and house are still stood up it was however left as a pollard so it can still be home to the owl.
  10. don't you just love spring mornings
  11. they do stay clear of eachother by at least half an inch the springs are a bit tricky on the mesh visor the rear end of the springs is attached to a plastic peg i removed the peg and attached the spring through the hole beside it but its a tight fit. mine also seems to work fine with the springs off all together
  12. this thread is daft the answer to most of the questions is that you should only do what is safe this should be decided before you start work (risk assesment) you should climb within your own limitations and make use of any aids/tools you have to make the job safer and easier. every tree is different what more can you say.
  13. you can fit both visors at the same time but you need to hook the little springs up differently so it can fit.
