  1. That's what I thought.............. I am actually sitting in my office on a platform in the middle of the Norwegian North Sea. There's no way I'm going outside to do anything, I'd rather surf Arbtalk and send an apprentice out to see if the UK is still getting our gas.........
  2. There is actually very stiff competition and absolutely no roundwood available on Arran at all, because it is all going for biomass (a sign of the times in the West of Scotland). Either to our commercial customers with woodchip boilers (mostly hotels) or to the new 5mWe power plant under development. We do, though, put a small percentage through our firewood processor to make logs..........
  3. A nice shot of some of our roundwood, ready for chipping. For those familiar with Arran, note Goatfell mountain in the background. Note also one of our major forest hazards here, recreational mountainbikers
  4. I'll call you on Monday Charles, If that is suitable.

  5. Sorry don't accept foreign currency...............(occasionally shiny beads if accompanied by a valid card) As it says on the E-bay listing 45 x 60 cm
  6. Don't laugh!! Bought these on E-bay as a trial. Don't know if they are any good, but we have filled 100 and they seem to hold together............... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=270307280121
  7. When faced with the problem of filling net bags with logs, decided against buying a log bagging device from Fuelwood at over £200 Instead, made a few of these out of an old sheet of aluminium. Simply pull on the bag, stand on the ground, fill with logs, draw out device and tie-off bag. Effective and simple (and cheap)
  8. MF 6170 has 3-pt linkage Farma crane and trailer, handles the timber LDV truck acts as logging bench and feed for processor Hakki Pilka driven by DB 990 and logs dropped right onto the Transit tipper (not shown).
  9. "There must be some regular delivery vehicles to Arran who could return with a load? Might need some basic packaging. I'm not far from you on the mainland. Perhaps we could work something out? "

We have looked into several options for freight across to Ardrossan, there are timber lorries going out loaded and looking for loads back to Arran - No good. Local hauliers are very good at planning loads both ways, however cheapest seems to be by bulk tipper.

So if you are interested in 15 tonnes of seasoned split logs in bulk.............

Where are you based, are you in the log supply business? Are you interested in a business proposition, eg take in solid wood and produce logs to deliver locally? We could send you over a log processing machine.....

  10. Perhaps the well engineered clones are priced according to manufacturing costs and not according to market-driven prices and fashion............. (there you go, that should get a few responses....)
  11. It's not our price that's the problem really, it's as you say, the cost of the ferry to the mainland : £550 for a 40ft trailer one-way!! At 20 tonne a load that's nearly £30 per tonne freight, before you go anywhere in mainland UK............... Experiencing good trade with locals, but the limit is the island population of 4,500.
  12. It's really frustrating for us, sitting here on Arran with hundreds of tonnes of well seasoned softwood, ideal for firewood production, but hundreds of miles from a high demand market.
  13. Yeah, and let's not forget that all of us who are VAT registered are really just unpaid tax collectors........ I didn't quite understand an earlier post that the cost of fuel has gone up for VAT registered operators. Surely the "excluding VAT" price for diesel stays the same? I hope someone can explain this one to me (I've never heard it before)............
  14. The crane is mounted on the tractor 3-pt linkage as normal. We had to modify the A-frame a bit to clear the PTO shaft and weld on new brackets for the chipper. The chipper 3-pt linkage set-up was modified to suit the new crane brackets.
  15. multiply that by 60 million people in the UK = £750,000,000 back into the economy. As they say in the US "do the math" These measures announced are not really intended to help you "Joe Bloggs", but more to help the overall UK economy...................
  16. I have over 150 tonnes of very dry, naturally seasoned softwood available. Could sell it processed into logs, or even roundwood lengths by the tonne. Only problem is that it's on the Island of Arran. I could arrange transport if anyone is interested. Might be worth consideration, especially if the local price of firewood rises and supply falls.
  17. Don't forget that VAT (moms) is 25% in Norway.
  18. He he, You can buy a wife cheap in Bankok, but most of us still go the expensive way (all for a bit of quality and service) !!! He he
  19. No profit there for you "Slasher". Interestingly, there is a guy from Perthshire, comes down and delivers in Ayrshire. He might even be driving past you to reach customers where he is making a killing. Ever thought of expanding your area? There must be a lot of frustrated dogs on Islay (no trees, etc). Just joking, Islay, Jura, Mull, Iona, et al - Gods Country.....................................................................
  20. Actually Mike, I am sitting on my PC here in Stavanger. I know the price of "fyringsved" here. How is the weather up in Bergen, wet and dull like here? Just watching Scotland beating RSA 10-0 at Rugby on the TV.
  21. 2 cubic meter loads in Ayrshire for £180, seems like a nice little earner to me.
  22. Quite possibly Shyhuck, and perhaps in your area the firewood prices are not as buoyant as in other areas. I am finding out that the retail firewood market varies considerably across the UK. In areas of short supply and high demand, the traders are more than satisfied with their healthy mark-up. So, I take your point, it's not an offer that suits everyone in our wide and wonderful country....
  23. Our cube bags are £40 each ex-yard on the Island of Arran, for a minimum load of 25 bags. Add to that the cost of £20 per bag to get them across to the mainland, to Ardrossan Harbour (post code KA22 8HB). Our driver can deliver anywhere in the near vicinity for no extra charge, but would charge more for longer distances, anywhere in the UK. It is not proving viable to send loads to England, but we are getting a lot of interest from firewood traders in the Scottish Central Belt, The Borders & Northern England. Alternatively, come to Arran for a nice weekend break and take a couple of bags home with you, will help to pay the ferry fare..............
