  1. This is interesting but i am little lost.. What are you actually trying to say? As huck says Pollarding was a practice undertaken for various reasons to retain the source of firewood and food. That practice is seldom undertaken for those reasons now,now its a heritage reason- veteranising isnt pollarding. Making trees look like how they used to look is a very different function than managing a resource that you need to survive.. But i am still not sure what you are getting at..
  2. Keep a tub of freshly chipped spruce next to the plastic one.. You could always sprinkle a bit on the floor for added affect?
  3. Its ace !! 'kin freezin- look at the photos in the 'how cold ' thread.. 'Plastic christmas trees, you only have to buy one...'
  4. I have started this so as not to hijack stevies lunge thread, but there have been a few posts about plastic christmas trees.. Come on who has one ?? We did till we set off !! Hucks got one, Am pretty sure stevie has:001_tt2: Carbon footprints ?!
  5. I bet its plastic really Thats what i had back home We have a few twigs and candles !! twas -13 last night Not sure about the lunge (tights??) LOL
  6. Stevie is that a plastic christmas tree in your avatar?
  7. In Frankfurt at the moment, its been -9 for a few nights, and - 13 last night. When the burner goes out in the truck its 'kin cold. Had a shower yesterday and the waste pipe had frozen, thought i would sort it in the morning so left the water in the shower tray, well it froze solid overnight:w00t:
  8. Its called high leading- look it up on wkipedia.. Some one else had the idea in 1904, sorry to burst the bubble.. It can be a bit of a carry on but suits certain situations.. and yes my mog is just the tool..
  9. Usually there is no cost in applying for a traffic light permit from the highways dept, its just a form to fill in , so any TM company charging is scamming IMO. But they must be informed if there are tempory lights even stop and go. To set up any roadworks ie to work on the side of the road even wothout lights you should have City + guilds signing and lighting to put a sign out. Rather than guess the cost, geta Traffic management firm to give you a written quote, any other contractor doing the work will have the same issues. Remember, if someone has a car crash in YOUR work site and you have not got proper TM ie ducking and diving, or you have got TM but not to the required standard ie chapt 8 you will NOT be insured. We have had highways inspectors measure the distance between signs to make sure they are correct (We had our own lights and and certs) as on the form you fill in you must detail the TM provider.. If an outside company supplies the TM then they could leave, but somoeon on site must have the correct cert, or they price to have someone on site..
  10. Its easier if going behind a tractor. SWB is right about the weight of the crane. There is a difference between a hiab type crane and a timber crane.. Lifters and loaders.. The lifter (hiab/atlas) are heavier and designed to lift loads- so you can use it for dismantling etc, but are slow for loading timber and dont always facilitate piping for grabs etc. Loaders (foresrty cranes) are for loading timber- fast slewing, lighter weight etc. But they will not lift something and 'hold' it under there own, so you can use them for dismantling but its not as safe. The problem with sticking a heavy crane on then beefing up the trailer etc and then loading it up with wood is that you will kill the tractor brakes, the trailer brakes will help, but they arent that great.. What was your trailer set up Stevie? Never saw that one !! You still got the shredder crane ?
  11. Whats it going behind? If its a mog you will need air brakes, grain trailers work ok, but you are starting with something designed for grain then batter it to death with a grab and timber.. Also trailers with sides are harder to load and unload lengths with a grab, tipping is fine but messy. IMO you got to analise what you want to move with it..lenghts, rings, brash ? Weight distribution, crane size, bolsters/sides etc etc. There is no cheap fix (believe me) Best set up trailer i have seen for surgery is Skyhucks..
  12. That would have been the perfect explanation of snatching ! Ouch !
  13. Say for arguments sake you get 12" x 12" x 10' of usable wood out, be it 2 " planks or a few beams this would be 10 cube at £ 17 for green oak its £170, if you can move it, mill it and sell it then thats what you could get, but it depends on how long the process takes you. If its a few hours its a winner..:thumbup1:You need a buyer or a place to store it. Storing it in 'stick' will add value. Its like a savings account with interest.. Selling green is the quickest return but lower value. It does depend on how it looks when its milled.. Its a gamble, unlike firewood, it dont matter what it looks like
  14. What i was meaning was the comment about its worth more as firewood.. And how do you work out the value of firewood ? If you bought some in the length then it could be £15-30 ton depending on what and where. If theres 35 cube ish in a ton then at £2 cube that stick is worth £70 ton for milling. To buy Oak saw logs this is what you would pay at least. I was just using the weight comparison as thats what firewood is measured in the stick but mill wood is measured in volume.
  15. How do Oak sold in the round for milling can be anything upto £5 cubic ft, usually measrued in Hoppus ft which accounts for wastage. The price you have been given for the size sounds about right to me.. The price depends on quality and where it is - ie roadside or delivered. Milled oak can then be upwards of £ 17 cube depending on how green it is.. and quality.. Here its £17 for beam oak upto a certain length then upwards again. The milling is 'adding value', so is logging it, but people think its worth more as logs but you are talking about the end poduct like milling.. will you get £20 a cube for logs ? Is £2 cube to sell it without doing anything to it worth it ? thats upto you !? If you work out £2 cube into tons it gives you a better idea of 'worth'. .. I used to do firewood but got far more money from 'squaring up' timber with the mill...it adds far more value for similar investment- thats proper firewood equipmnet vs mill, not an axe and saw... Just my take on it stan
  16. Anyone seen one of these... MAN 8.136 ex danish army lorry. 7.5ton, 4x4 Basically a very similair spec to a mog1300L, but a little simpler. Problem is anything other than a mog will be hard to get registered as ag, then you are in to a whole different world.. Stan
