Tesco cooking oil:001_smile:
£14 for 15 litres.
That's agreat idea, I must admit the thought had entered my head a few times. Currently using Sthil biosafe (i think that's its name) very expensive, I've tried the cheaper ones in the past but they have caused problems with the oil pump. Would love to give the veggie oil a go. Anyone else out there use veggie oil??? Any problems?

Could be Dryads saddle. Back in the days at college my fungi id used to be pretty good, but nowadays it seems it's not up to scratch. I'm trying to improve on it this year, so I'm paying lots of attention to the fungi pages at the moment. So keep the photos coming in please.

No. But if they could get one to run on arse gas we'd all be a lot better off!!!!!!

thanks

Remove a limb or top it? I'd say topping wont be any more favourable tbh.
Just ntp the limb and tell them to keep an eye on it.
ntp the limb??????????

I agree, a Pollard in my opinion is the way to go, but as said I don't think it's an option. I would rather not leave a stub and agree that the best way to ensure the health and optimum repair from the pruning is to target prune, but I wonder if that wound would be just too large at that height on the main stem, there's a lot of weight and leverage above it. I think what I should do is send the quote in with a strong recomendation for the whole tree to be pollarded and we'll see where that gets us.

I'm thinking about leaving a stub, in practice Pollarding the stem to be removed, I know it's not going to be visually pretty but it should be better for the remainder of the tree shouldn't it??

Don't know

Don't get me wrong I love a good Pollard, I think the two neighbours won't swallow it though.

Get a straight stick long enough so that if you hold it at arms length out in front of you the tip/end just touches your nose. Then hold the stick up/vertical(once again at arms length in front of you) and walk backwards or forwards until the tree in the backgroung looks as tall as the stick you are holding. When that happens stop where you are put the stick in the ground. The distance from the stick (in the ground) to the base of the tree in the same as its height. Can be surprisingly accurate!!!!
Or you could buy a clinometer from Honey bros. The stick is a lot cheaper and there's never a shortage of them.

Good idea but I have the distinct feeling that is not an option.

Hello all
Looked at a job today part of it involved removing a limb off an Ash. No problem to do, but it looks as if it's on the boundary of what I can take off without leaving a too large wound on the main stem. I'm a bit worried it may make the remaining stem structurally weaker when the wound dies back. What do you guys/gals think. The main stem is about 300mm at the point of the proposed wound, the stem to come off is about200mm, they are quite similar in diameter. Any thoughts would be helpfull
Ta very much

Can't help m8 always found Ash to be most agreeable when it comes to burning it
-
as we all know ash is a a top quality firewood.been burning it here for the last few yrs and found it to be the best around but but ive recently taken down a perfectly healthy ash tree for a council job, took all the nice rings home, split em but but they are not burning that well luckily have some beautifully seasoned beech and oak but have noticed that the ash is not giving off that sizzling intense heat im used too.has anyone else experienced this
What was the reason for taking down the Ash if it was perfectly healthy???

So Pete just to clarify do you reckon you need to turn the screws???
-
Mine are identical to Petes. All you need to do is drill a 13mm hole through the existing baffleing. Then richen the mixture so its not screaming.
How much do you reckon on turning it up???
-
Can't wait to see the pics, think I'll be getting my drill out this weekend!!!!!

I'd love to paintball them straight between the eyes at point blank, but it's catching them at it without spending hours and days hidden somewhere and you can bet your bottom dollar, for every one you catch there'll be another scumbag waiting in the wings to nick some more
Spent about an hour up the yard hidden in the bushes trying to catch the buggers the other night...........got bored came home.

Were currently flogging it on ebay for £45 per builders bag for mixed hardwood, its selling like hotcakes.
The firewood market has picked up over the last couple of years, probably due to the rising energy costs
Do you have a hiab on the truck or can one man lift a builders bag full of logs off the back of a truck???

Always good for giving a fright! but i wouldnt have thought that would deter people if they realise that houses are far enough away to give them time to load up and dissappear before you arrive.
Good luck!
Have you used one of these??? Are they as good as they look??
-
Exactly, I always try to put the ash etc one side for personal use. Have you had problems since???

Hello y'all
Just been down to my yard to find that some luverly person has helped themselves to a load of Ash cord wood.........left the conifer and shite wood......... very decerning indeed.
Bit wound up and have a feeling may be the start of a regular occurance.
My yard is a little bit in the sticks but obviously some one knows it excists!!! Have you good people got any tips on security for a rural yard, no electrics, no tools stored, just chips and wood/logs. Would a gate with a padlock really work?? I'm thinking along the lines of cemtex under the cordwood stacks and logs. I know it's no like getting a chipper nicked, but it's still annoying and hard not to take personal. Rant over!!!!!
