Its a Rhododendron, not quite sure of the species, but it is a Himalayan species, not a garden hybrid type. The leaves have a thick furry layer of indumentum on the back.

Yup, in the heart of Rusholme. Which made finding unusual Himalayan shrubs even more surprising. He also had this, which came from Muncaster in the Lakes, where my brother works.

Flowers are nice, but it does smell! The wood is a bit like Eucalyptus, soft, wet, and heavy.

Decayed beech fell from the other day. Dropped it straight into the road. Quite a tight spot but it fell perfectly.

Worked in a proper plantsman's garden today. Felled an Acer griseum, and coppiced a Drimys winterii. Thats the one in the centre of the pic. I think it will respond well.

No points here. Did you get them in a work vehicle or your car? I only really drive my transit, and that doesnt go very fast!

Heres a question for you Celoxman. Say I stick a chainsaw into a femoral artery, and I happen to be standing next to the first aid kit, which has the only packet of celox in it. Should I wait 30 seconds or so for the blood pressure to decrease so its more effective, or just rip the pack open and pour it straight in? I know what would happen in real life, just curious as to what would give the best result.

Bit dull though, all those years hanging around in caverns waiting for some to turn up so you can rage on their ass. I suppose you could learn the guitar or sommat to while away the long days. You'd probably end up inventing punk.

I would never have fallen 20m, even right at the top I dont think I was more than 5m above the lower TIP. Besides I got a lanyard on wherever possible when above the lower TIP. Any fall of more than say 0.5 m is greatly undesirable though, as you say. The only time the two TIPs shared the load properly was when I was out at the sides of the crown, when lateral forces on the TIP are highest. I think you are much less likely to break a dodgy TIP when you are loading it from directly above. It is the same principle as pulling a tree over with a rope, you stand far away with a low rope angle to increase leverage, you dont stand underneath the tree!

A lot easier to work with, but the load on the last anchor in the chain is going to be much much higher than in a 2 rope doubled rope system. In a dodgy anchor situation surely you want to reduce the risk of snapping an anchor to the minimum, even if it is backed up, especially since your srt multi-anchor system would mean taking a fall on a very low stretch rope. (Not trying to be over-critical, just thinking through all the implications)

Depends what you call cheap. You could do the course with a McCullough from B&Q, but it wouldnt be good for much else. I would suggest you buy a Stihl MS260 or the Husqvarna equivalent, and you'll get a good price from Jonsie. (FR Jones and Son)

Yes, I can see it would be a pain in many circumstances. The only time I have done it was in a big basket, with a really good mewp operator, who more importantly, understood tree work. If any of those elements are missing, you are wasting your time. I have my ipaf ticket, so if it was easier I would both cut and operate.

Having two in the basket can be really useful. I have worked with a really good mewp operator, in an Aerial platform with a big 2 man basket, and he puts it where you want it without having to ask, leaving you to just cut cut cut. And he'll hold a piece while you cut it,which can be very handy.

On the other hand, if a significant proportion of these saws are going to be lost, stolen, or run over, then its cheap and cheerful all the way!
