  2. top one is a Jonsereds 60, and the lower one a 49sp good saws both, very reliable.
  3. blaming others Sounds familiar a little closer to home.
  4. my guess would be most injuries are caused by idiots who have absolutely no idea about operating any type of chainsaw, no idea of safety procedures, no ppe, no awareness of anything around them, I gave a talk on saw safety and use as a prep to the upcoming basic test. a few of those claimed to have used chainsaws previously and yet knew nothing of tension and compression when making cuts, and some of these failed regardless of my efforts, I spoke to the tester after, in his opinion two individuals in particular stood out,[not any of mine] one of whom thought it perfectly ok to use a husqvarna 55 single handed above his head. the other arrived to do the test in shorts and tee shirt claiming he would get the required safety gear if he passed. someone lent him their gear to complete the test and he failed it, it was painful to observe. nothing I had taught him had sunk in. of those that failed most gave it a second try, and paid more attention to the requirements and passed, others gave up and never bothered, I know one of those failures injured himself at a later date cutting down a tree for a neighbor with no ticket at all. the problem will be in time the idiots will dictate the level of restrictions on purchasing and operating saws and probably any similar equipment. anyone can be the victim of an accident, but with good instruction and a willingness to think and listen the chances can be almost eliminated. but never drop your guard with trees. I just remembered, there were a couple of videos[no dvds back then,or internet] I had been given to show on days too wet for safe work, one was a promotional video by Husqvarna obviously promoting their range of equipment, with a lesser part on safe use. the other was an american video of actual accidents involving chainsaws, I recall it was pretty graphic, the narrator showing many incidents nothing short of comedic at first sight but becoming deadly serious in their conclusion, often resulting in horrific injuries, blurred out in the final seconds, these were all filmed by neighbors and helpers on hand held cine cameras. To illustrate the effectiveness of a chainsaw on flesh at full chat, he had a steer carcass on a meat hook suspended from the roof and promptly warmed up the saw and then in one fast move cut the steer in half diagonally in seconds, "this is what a chainsaw can inflict on human flesh in the wrong hands" it was a feckin' real eye opener to everyone their, but it certainly made the point, he then demonstrated on a model the effectiveness of chainsaw pants as the yanks call them, the saw never made contact with the dummy, jamming the saw very efficiently. I wish I still had the videos but I had to return them .
  5. majority of them, yes, the pioneer nu 17 needs a coil, one of the smaller pioneers needs a carb conversion, as parts don't exist for the original, I have cut with most of them. If I got a call today to fell I could probably fuel up a dozen or more suitable for just about anything that needs to come down, I'm retired now so it doesn't happen often. this year one has been earmarked for felling, I will probably get involved with that but it's going to involve a climb and I don't do that at 72.
  6. I'm herring a bit of an alewife too.
  7. Thought a few pics might be of interest.
  8. ok, another tale of John. back when I was still working I would occasionally fell a few trees for a local landscaping outfit, I would usually get John a few days or more work, he was despite everything a good worker, he was still driving at that time so I got him on my lorry insurance, we would generally get the wood for nothing and we would sell a bit for firewood here and there and keep Johns mum in wood for the year, if we had plenty of spare after that any proceeds would get put in a jar for a bit of a night out at the end of the year, so one Christmas we all go for a slap up meal and a few,, beers. so we're all at Johns waiting for the minibus to pick us up and there's a knock on the door, thinking it was the minibus and being closest I said " here we go" and made my way to the door, I opened it and there's this woman and a bloke standing there?, " are you the minibus we ordered?" "no , Do you live here"?the woman said. "No hold on I'll get him for you" and I gently closed the door and went and told John, "what do they want" he says, "I don't know I never asked, go and ask them" I go back to the others and John goes to the door, when he opens it there's 3 people there, one is the minibus driver, plus the mystery pair, So John shouts "minibus is here" everyone is now standing in the hallway and John says "who are you two"? the woman announces,, "we're collecting for the local swimming pool, would you like to donate"? John says " I'm now going out but ok wait there" and disappears back into the house, we continue to board the minibus, so we're wait for John and the door opens and he steps out gives the woman a bucket of water, "There you go" and leaves them on the doorstep. we were almost at the restaurant before the driver stopped laughing. we had a great night out, next time I'll tell you what happened at the restaurant.
  9. you'll be ok, cutting up a bit of fresh coriander on it, but just don't grind the wood up and snort it.
  10. I heard the very same in 2014, and probably a dozen times to date.
  11. I don't know Stubby, but the future of his tree looks a bit bleak.
  12. probably only half of that will be served, even less if somebody posts a nasty tweet, and they need the cell for them.
  13. I dare say a few of us might have seen this. for those who haven't, Discuss. wow, thought you farage haters would have been all over this?
  14. probably having a bit of a pout.
  15. I couldn't help but notice the op hasn't bream back.
  16. you never came back with a fish Stubby? are you beginning to flounder.
  17. wildlife cameras work fine, a clear picture night and day, however they are easily spotted and taken too, if obvious they are aligned on the fuel tank, a system whereby a number of cameras filming each other can work as they rarely look for more once they think they have the one that captures their actions. the problem is the image will only show the individuals committing the theft and no detail as they will be wearing facemasks, or hoodies pulled over faces, and they don't look anywhere but down, so id is almost certainly impossible. have a covert look around, see if you can find any signs of a parked vehicle, even a little spillage from the stolen diesel, try placing a trail cam in that area, you may get an image before they cover up, and possibly a vehicle number, at the least you might find out who is cheating in the village, I did! confrontation is not an advisable option unless you don't have a problem taking a life over a tank of diesel,, and a lengthy court case as Tony Martin discovered. they will certainly not want to get caught, and may not care about stabbing you, and leaving you to bleed out. you may think all this somewhat dramatic,, but rather that than reading here you were found one morning. I heard one fella thought he had found a deterrent, used a fuel bowser, filled the tractor and other machinery from it, end of the day pumped any surplus back in the bowser and took it home, evidence showed they visited and never got any diesel, two nights later they came and again got no diesel, they took the batteries, filled the cabs with straw and lit it up. bloke gave up , moved to Canada with his entire family, said he'd rather risk living with bears and wolves.
  18. Me neither ,I'll just perch here for awhile.
  19. cant give you a definitive answer I'm afraid, but the photo reminds me of the massive stand of Thuja plicata that is present on the private estate I live on, I cant photo the actual tree but it's well over 80' tall and probably as wide, it is said it was planted as 2-3 separate trees and allowed to grow into what it is today, various generations of the current owners have explored and played withing the labyrinth of trunks it has made over the many, many years it has been there. this photo is not the tree in question as that location is to remain private at the owners request, but a much smaller example.
  20. Ok, here we go with Big John, tale#1, one of my pastimes when younger was running dogs, lurchers, salukis, even whippets, John was always interested and loved dogs, but due to knowing he had a short time left, could not own one, but he accompanied me on many occasions, so we were returning from a successful morning, I had a couple of hundred quid and a decent Sunday dinner for me and the wife, I should point out at this time it was legal, and we had full permission from the landowner, so flushed with success I suggested a pint to celebrate, realizing we were a way from home and our local would be closed, John suggested, "just stop at the next pub we see" not long along the way we spot a pub and pull into the car park, I have never left any dog in the vehicle, as a good lurcher is a valuable friend and provider I don't want it getting stressed from heat, or getting stolen by any passing ne'er do wells, so I put him on his lead and we make our way to the door of the pub, John, ever helpful and happy to be able to walk him, asks "can I take him" "yeah sure" and I hand him the lead, about the same time I notice a small sign on the door,, NO DOGS, EXCEPT GUIDE DOGS. which I point out to John, "it'll be ok" he says, and walks through the pub door, about roughly 5 steps in,, landlord looks at us, and says,, "Oi", no dogs except guide dogs" John answers,, "it is a guide dog" landlord,, " don't come that here mate, guide dogs are Labradors" John, no hesitation at all, stares vacantly into blank space, reaches down to the lurcher, runs his hands over it and says,,, "Well what have they given me then" ****************in' place erupted,, landlord is in stiches,, "you can stay, and the dog too, that's the best laugh I've heard in my pub for a long while" It was typical of John Humor, always quick thinking, and if you didn't know his history you would never know he would be gone in such a relatively short time.
