  19. tree surgery Updated

Arboriculture and Tree Surgery Crown reduction will reduce the spread and the height of the tree whilst maintaining the shape. It will to allow more light and air to flow around the tree. This technique is used when trees are growing toward buildings or other trees Crown thinning is to remove selective branches throughout the tree that are dead, weak or dying, crossing, rubbing and branches that are poorly attached. Crown thinning will reduce weight and make the tree more stable, whilst reducing the need for major work in years to come. Crown lifting is to remove selective branches from the lower levels of the tree to allow more light onto the ground for lawns or buildings, and to allow access. Formative pruning will ensure the tree has the best start in life by removing problems early on and allowing the tree to develop into a structurally strong frame, thus reducing the need for major work as it matures. Planting Touchwood supply and plant a number of container grown trees and bare root trees in season. Pollarding is a very old technique for keeping trees small by regular cutting. It is best to start this process when the tree is young. Topping Touchwood does not carry out topping operations as it is bad practice and extremely damaging to trees. However some trees that have been topped, can, with careful pruning be sustained. Managing dead wood can be extremely valuable for habitat. So long as the risks are minimised it can be left standing and a pruning technique used called natural fracture. The tree will be left with natural looking shattered and torn edges providing great aerial habitat for a range of woodland creatures including micro-organisms, insects, birds and bats. All tree work undertaken by Touchwood Trees adheres to the following legislation: The Town & Country Planning Act 1997 BS 3998: 1989 "Recommendations for Tree Work" BS 5837: 2005 "Trees in Relation to Construction - Recommendations" New Roads and Street Works Act 1991. Work at Height Regulations 2005 LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998) PUWER (the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998)
