Heres a pictorial to help distinguish between the two.

The following pictures consist of P. fraxinea brackets.

First two showing the complete girdling around of an Ash that it's killed, the next three on one side of a deteriating Ash.

I know a master woodturner that would of ripped your arm off for that, with all the colour in it.

even though I know it has the potential for being a large bracket, that one in your third pic is huge compared to the actual tree.

What came out of the hole at the back of it?

No- that was just pulled away from the trunk of the tree. You can see the root buttress under the tip of the wedge there. They went right round the tree, and 12 months before, there was no sign of it at all.
