some of these axles have a one shot nut that gets staked in place when its torqued up if you replace the cables get the stainless ones they are only a couple of quid extra

The SS cables are good but beware the brand, I have seen some where the cable is SS which is great to stop stretch, but the jacket isn't so if water gets in they rust and seize up the same as any other.

I had similar problems. Wheel bearing had little play but nothing excessive, wasn't that. On the back of wheel hub is the little flicker switchy thing. This alters the brakes, however for some reason, you have to have draw bar connected to the tow bar, something to do with engaging the breaking system before adjusting. The side getting hot will need the arrow to go backwards iirc, as following direction of arrow adjusts the brakes up. Also consider that it could be the long screw bolt thingy on draw bar.

Love the description!!!

However, never touch the long screw bolt thingy on draw bar! Never mess with the linkage unless new shoes/drums/cables have been fitted!

My timberwolf does have a handbrake. I'm going to put in in the garage this weekend and strip it all down, once the hub is off to reach the bearing is there a hairpin I need to get out?

Take the wheel and the centre hub cover off. Inside there's a castle nut held on with a split pin. Remove both of these and then you can take the brake drum off but it can be tricky.

It could be one of the brake shoes retaining springs has broken so it's rubbing on the drum and getting warm ?
