I've had my first attempt at an apple. I don't know how others do it but I started between centres to get the main shaking done then put a foot on a couple of inches back from what would be the bottom of the apple and put it in a chuck to finish of with the top of the apple at the free end. I kept trying to shape the bottom as best I could until it parted and then sanded and oiled by hand.

This is how the bottom turned out. I used a drill bit to scrape out the nub that was left

Nice, I have been turning fruit for the first time last week.

I was shown to make this bit to go on the end so I could turn it around. It's got a screw in the bottom to fix it to it.

Do you mean you have a screw in from the piece on the right, into the the bottom of your apple

yes like this. i need to make out of some decent hardwood and glue the screw in.

you drill a hole in the bottom of the apple as a pilot for the screw. Someone suggested putting a clove in the bottom for a realistic affect.

Try making a tapered jam chuck I use MDF on a face plate, then what ever fruit from plums to apples can be reverse mounted and the bottom gently finished and polished, I find sanding sealer and a light wax gives a good finish. The stalk can be made with a small dowel sharpened in a pencil sharpener to give a taper then cut at an obtuse angle, and as I said before a clove in the bottom finishes them of nicely.

 

Great shapes its difficult to make them look "real". nice work.

They're brilliant Lazarus. How does the jam chuck work. Do you need the tailstock in for that
