I worked with a bloke who bought two pigs, got sawdust bedding from a pallet factory, slaughtered pigs had passed fit for human consumption but he was ill after eating it, so off to the lab who said were did you get this meat its full off PCP ( timber praservative) and not fit to eat.

So as mentioned above contamination can be an issue you may not have even considered.

The Briquettes is a good idea

As the name implies its very dry as it's been dried in a kiln and is without preservatives. We have considered burning it as the government do give out funding but the investment is high and the payback long
