Inonotus hispidus, this is the first time that I have seen this fungus in west Wales. Unfortunately it is growing on an Ash which has about 500 school kids walking under it twice a day, so it will have to be removed.

Sorry pictures are not very good, as it is 10' up, and i had to stand on the roof of my Landy.

Possibly a cheaper option and still beneficial / educational?

Certainly educational. No doubt woodpeckers and eventually bats would love that standing stem being decayed by the Inonotus, too - let alone insects that live on the bracket of the Inonotus itself (of which at least two are very rare species). Monolith it and plant some wild flowers around it, put a small sign up (get the kids to make it?), maybe a small fence, and bam, a realy cool scene that satisfies all parties - at very little cost.

Any reason why its rare in that part of the country?

Sorry i quoted the wrong reply, there is not that many different types of fungi in west Wales, which is probably to do with low levels of trees historically.

I had a quick look on the NBN website, and it shows no records for south Pembs, and only one for north Pembs.
