about an hour to get it to a slab shape then got it home and sanded it down-10 min, then oiled it, which was annoying cos u av to wait for it to dry, weighed loads, it was a turkish oak 120ish year old

real cracking chunk of wood.

 

know of any good books on woodwork? want to make table..but nails and screws are no no.

avnt got that far yet but ive had ideas, like kitchen work tops but it has to be really good grains on it and decent timber, ive got an ash plantation of about 1 acre and there are some really big lumps in there, am gagging to mill them up

Paint the endgrain of the log before you mill it next time, its easeier and the boards stay cleaner. You can use almost anything for this. Oil should be applied once the wood has dried out, or you wil risk the oil/ varnish etc being thrown off as the water escapes the wood. Strictly speaking one coat isnt enough indoors. The rule of thumb used to be a coat per hour for a day, a coat per day for a week, a coat a week for a month and a coat per month for a year. The earlier coats ought to be mixed 50/50 with turpentine for better penetration of the wood. This way a sort of lacquer is built up that is very protective. Between coats wire wool can be used on finer pieces of work for a better finish.

 

 

In reality i just keep applying it for a couple of days and that has never rreally let me down.
