Question

We have a small tree in the back garden, I think its an acer, but not sure which.

It mostly looks full of health, except nearly a third of it is completely bare.

One of the main branches has no leaves at all, it has buds but they look like they gave up a little while ago.

Any ideas on what caused it? does it need any action? Also, any chance of a more definite ID?

Verticillium wilt is likely. I think it is a Maple but would need to see/know more about it to be certain. Does it colour up a lot in the Autumn.

Acer Pseudo plat "Worlii".Yellow sycamore. Could well be Pinkfoot; but the leaves are so pointed from the images I can find. Does the type vary?

if we can see a section of cut stem - v wilt shows as a circular dark band

Generally dies back down one side before killing the rest of the branch .

Really bad on Acer plat.
