upside down winch

just got this winch of the front of a mates tractor he is selling and was planning to fit a hitch to fit on the front of my digger is there any reason it would not work upside down as in the last 2 pics as it would be much easier to fit bracket any pins from an old bucket this way. only planning small scale winching of firewood up a banking

The worm gear won't be lubricated

That too but it's normally possible to swap a drain plug with a breather.

Why not mount it the right way on a lump of I beam sticking out back and put lugs on it and a blade on the front to lesson pull on boom

the end with vent could be turned in the frame so vent at the top no vent on the end where the motor is but see the point about the wormgear being out of the oil

may have to look at woody pauls suggestion of a beam under it
