Should it look like this?

Could have been worse, you could have stopped the piston with one of these. You know, if someone had asked me before I found these, what a pipe cleaning pig was, I'd have been thinking along the lines of David Camaron and his happy days at uni.

The wire in your pipe cleaners have scored the piston, chances are that it will not cause much of an issue as the ring has probably not ben damaged as it is harder than the cleaner.

Just smooth the piston lightly with some very fine paper - finishing paper would be ideal.

It worried about particles getting down into the piston chamber?

To answer you original question. No it shouldn't look like that.

It should be sparkling clean before you take it apart. Much easier to clean when it's in one piece and you reduce the danger of getting bits where they shouldn't be.

I wanted to do that but was not really possible without pressured air. Just made sure to be very careful to not knock anything anywhere. The machine hadn't been used in 3 years.

Eh? But I did stop the piston with a pipe cleaner. Let's say I accidentally jammed the piston with one.
