How to Check who has Certs?

Let him do the work, show you the cards, get a job simples!

Absolutely..... First initiative test!

Maybe contacting NPTC later, but has he also 'forgotten' where he did the training? I bet the training centre could quite easily check records of previous training / assessment just to put your mind at rest whilst waiting for certified copies.

If you or he gets a copy of a photo cert, do not laminate it! They've changed the ink, which is now no longer heat proof. You end up with a multi coloured laminated swatch. Pretty but useless. Instead, get something like this:

http://www.lanyardstomorrow.co.uk/en/id-card-holders/id-badge-card-plastic-pocket-holder-horizontal-pouchs-10-x-8cm.html?gclid=CKKs8truqcwCFRSeGwodrN0AdQ#.Vx4XnMh4Wc0

and if you want it waterproof, just seal the opening with glue.

I suspected his certificate might have been fake (lost the card but brought a copy of the certificate)

Surely this comment raises a whole different reason for C&G NPTC to provide a service to check the credentials of a potential employee. As others have said not having the certificates would make me suspicious but having fake certificates could lull you into a false sense of security. As an employer you have a duty of care to ALL your staff. If you unwittingly employ someone that is actually not competent to perform a task then you could be endangering the lives of your other employees. I'm guessing that such a scenario would also invalidate any insurance claim be it employers liability or public liability.

All NPTC test centres will have access to this information. You should explain to him that your insurance will need concrete evidence of his qualifications especially as they need to be refreshed every 3-5 years to meet HSE regs. Then ask him to contact the local (or any) NPTC test centre explaining that he is unsure when he achieved these qualification as he's lost the certs and when he needs to be refreshed and hopefully they should be able to look it up. He might also be able to get a screenshot of the info for your records. But ideally he needs to apply for new certs.

Alternatively if he looked to do some additional/next step NPTC training +assessment; this would generate a new card listing all his NPTC quals. If he says that he has 201,202,203(CS30/31) then you could look into him achieving 301(CS32) at your local centre and they would check their records to ensure he's already completed the 201,202,203(CS30/31).

Hope that helps.
