wood chip for smokers..

Saw manuka shavings in diy stores in NZ last December for use in smokers, they were small chainsaw curls type material with not a lot of fines in them.

 

A friend does his own smoking and tells he even dampens the twigs to increase smoke vapours.

Yup, know exactly what you're getting at.

 

Have a look at the Pro Q smoke generator, low tech, just fill with sawdust and light it and it burns for 8 hours. No need to light a fire and tend, plus it doesn't heat the smoke box by more than about 1c above ambient.

 

Interesting. Have you ever tried putting planings in something like that?

I don't think it would work with planings unless you can pack them really tightly. Worth a go though.

 

Shouldn't be too hard to convert planings into dust. The material they sell for the purpose is like pencil sharpenings in size.

 

Sanding dust might work if you can find a way of collecting it while keeping it clean.
