Ways in to Arboriculture from scratch.

Interesting thread. I stumbled upon it while searching for information about courses and options.

 

I'm coming to the end of my ND and considering my options. I've a career background in IT and now I'm retraining in arb with interests in ecology and surveys.

 

As it happens I started (and dropped out due to house move) an ecology foundation degree at Myerscough about 4 years ago and think it's an excellent college. So I'm biased a little towards it anyway. I'd love to go for the degree they offer, but unfortunately Myerscough is in Lancashire, and I'm not.

 

Where I study at the moment offer an HND one afternoon/evening a week, which opens up possibilities of working at the same time. The foundation degree in arb at Myerscough offers distance learning and flexibility, and it's Myerscough, and they're good.

 

HND on the doorstep versus Foundation Degree by distance online learning? Currently wondering what the pluses and minuses are. Anyone any thoughts on the relative merits of these qualifications?

I have a friend who's doing this, its a lot of work to do as well as a day job, not impossible though. If your interests lie in consultancy then the degree would probably be the way to go.

I am wondering how to get into arboriculture as i have no qualifications at all in it, i have had some previous experience of doing grounding work for a tree surgeon doing alot of wood chipping for a few days but couldnt be taken on due to insurance issues.

 

Are there any NPTC assessment centres anyone can tell me that are good in the lincolnshire area??

Keep looking and get stuck in, work hard for someone and they will help you progress your career...

Hiya there everyone

 

I have been in the game 3 years now and have mastered both the ground work and climbing. I have my tickets but i am yearning to get more academic qualifications. Alot of what i read is spot on, i trained with richard olley and the courses were really good.

I have picked up alot of information quickly through working hard and gaining trust, then tapping into other peoples experience and knowledge.

now i have come up to a wall where i feel i need to get some formal qualifications for 2 reasons. One is for my self the pursuit of knowledge, the other is commercial i want the customer to know they are employing a tree surgeon who knows what they are talking about. To all those about to jump down my throat experience and tickets sometimes outway idiots with quals and vice versa, but i would like to be an all rounder.

 

The trouble i have is i live in Swansea and have a family and morgate. There is now where to go! i am even considering a hort course just to get some of the basics on board.

 

After all that i just want to ask how hard are these correspondance courses are? and are they worth the paper their written on.
