after seeing a bucket mounted winch working in the forestry here Ive been toying with a smaller version for my 3 tonner so will keep an eye on this thread

the one that was here was mounted in an old bucket and the wire could either go through a hole in the back of bucket or straight up the inside of the dipper and over a pully to give height will see if I can dig out some photos

Looking at gearing up one of our excavators (10-14ton) with a boom mount winch (or where the tool box is) can anyone recommend any do's/dont's for this?

Have a look at A&B Services Killin website for some ideas

I like the idea of the bucket mount winch! Wonder what it's like for trying to steer a butt up a bankside around obstacles (with the cable coming directly from the drum) or if a pulley head on the top of the dipper may allow for more manoeuvrability with messing the cable lay up?

I've got a winch mounted to a bucket on my 3 tonner and it's got a roller fairlead. It's a handy bit of kit for small jobs where it's not worth getting the skidder in. You can lift the arm to get the drag over stumps and steer it with the slew as long as the logs not too heavy. As above have a look at a and b services website, they are exelelent engineers and have been doing this type of stuff for years.
