I use this one, suppose by bending the rules you mean going up without bothering to back it up with a klemheist or prussik, of course if it isn't backed up there is no way of baling out when you reach the hornets nest.

 

The double handed ascenders are probably bulkier to carry about in the tree than a rope wrench, tether and haas, so that method seems better - zigzag already on, just a knot to untie.

 

I think it takes a lot of practice to work a tree SRT, I'd have so many redirects it would be a mess.
