Potential Stihl ms181 purchase

Thanks everyone for your advice, going to the local dealer tomorrow they sell echo, husky, and Stihl so will get a good opertunity to try them all hopefully, didn't realise a bigger bar made the saw slower but I'm totally new to chainsaws every day is a school day

 

If you divide engine cc by three that is max bar length in inches

 

This is of course a guide & if exceeded then the saw will rev slower due to the increased reistance of the chain around a longer bar. A longer bar is fine but you need to keep the chain sharp.

 

There may also be an issue with oiling a longer bar sufficiently. Hence the suggested range of bar lengths for a particular saw.

On the ms261 the earlier issues with clutch side bearings where due to a bad batch of clutch drums supposedly whereby the central bearing hole wasn't bored square (or round as the case may be) causing premature wear of the bearing and crank itself.

Later ones sorted but I would advise anyone with an earlier 261 who hasn't change the clutch drum to do so along with a new bearing.

Thanks everyone for the pointers ordered a Stihl ms211 with 16inch bar today was not a huge jump in price from the 181.

 

Ordered all round trousers and files etc

 

Now time to book the how to use it safely course!

Yes, Ive heard the oval shape in the drive - the rim drive ones were thought to be related but I think a few with spurs also.
