Why do we have to pay more in the UK?

I'm seriously looking for an 8 tonne forestry winch. Liked the spec on paper ,and the build weight and rope capacity of Kdg winches. The discounted price from the Uk distibuter of a ful spec 8T with remote control,unwinder etc is £5975 +vat

Searching on google, same spec, in Germany is advertised for 7300Eur including VAT at 20%

which equates to £4500 + vat

now that is a big difference, if it cost another £500 to transport it to the uk? Is this another case of RIP off Britain? or the importer being greedy? What would other people do? TIA John

This, it seems you're a bit off in your maths, €7300≈£5500.

please read again Rover, price in Germany was 7300 euro which included vat at 20%. A tight Welsh hill farmer is not going to be far off when it comes to his hard earned cash!

no probs, Just been on e-bay.de (german) big saving to be made on Uniforest winches too! All the established farm machinery dealers around here have made a vast fortune on our backs over the years! The internet has given us the tool to shop around. As for warrenty, heck a winch? not much to work out how to repair?

This is probably not the importers but a combination of greedy exporters and greedy home manufacturers. I have tried to buy from abroad only to be met by a refusal to supply to UK. This tells you that there are 'special' rates that apply to the UK i.e. high. This means they sell high to UK importers who then have to pass on the higher prices.

 

If we had a good (with log splitters this would mean equivalent to Posch, Krpan, Uniforest or suchlike) and competitive manufacturing sector they would realise that they could clean knock out the imports if they charged right. But they don't, they simply go for very high profit margins. So we end up with what we have: cheap on the continent and USA, high in the UK, little decent home-grown competition!

There is a Biiiiig price difference with greenmech CS100's Being a lot cheaper in the UK than here in France, even though there are dealers here.

So its not always cheaper in Euroland, always pays to shop around.
