Equipment storage again!

Without going into to much detail for the sake of security, where do you guys keep your larger equipment ie stump grinders, chippers, mini-skids, saws etc, what do you keep this kind of kit in, storage container, shed, industrial unit, barn or other?

How much does your storge cost you per month? i'm looking at storing my kit [not vehicles obviously] in a 20' container, at a proper storage compound with with security cameras, electric gates and security fencing, it will cost me roughly £100 per month

I'm also paying £60 a month to a local farmer for log and chip storage, I also use the farm as an operating center for my lorry, so in total i'm looking at £160 a month in total for all my equipment storage, what do you think too much or about right?

I would love to use the farm as storage ie get my own container up there, but security just isn't good enough!

Whilst we are on the subject who do you guys insure your kit with, i'll be honest my kit other than the tractor hasn't been insured for the last few years as the premium was just too high imo

We pay £175 a month for some space on a farm where we have a shipping container, room for vehicles (incl. tractor). and a small mountain of wood chip, and logs; although we had to install cables, meter etc in order to have electricity supply for lights and log splitter. The security is poor as it it in a quiet place with no residents and only gamekeepers presence at odd hours. Thus far we have not recieved a bill for electricity.

Before that we paid £180 for a space on a farm where we had use of tractor and electricity, but did not store equipment there, apart from a vehicle & log splitter ( no electricity charge as farmer made use of logsplitter and we supplied wood chip for menage). Bonus was a big burning unit. It was more secure, being at the back of a working farm where people lived full time, and horsey people were always in and out.

Well I think I'm quite lucky in the respect I don't own to much machinery! the six saws are in a locked steel cabinet bolted down in the garage.

The garage is behind locked gates with the Ifor parked infront of them which is chained down.

I'm lucky that I don't need a chipper very often so I hire one in and keep overnight storage to absolute minimum though a 150 will go in the garage.

I'm insured with the NFU I'm loyal customer I had a nasty accident a few years ago writing off my previous rover, The NFU were so helpfull and friendly it was all sorted so quickly and easily I just don't want to risk using some one else. my premium has gone up about 20 quid in 4 years. But again I'm probably lucky in that I don't need PL and EL cover for climbing work as I don't do any.

Lee do you insure your trailers?? I seem to remember you posting pics of quite a few varying Ifors? my trailers cost me 30 quid each a year to insure as an add on to my vehicle policy. I couldn't sleep at night if they were not insured as I know of 14 that have been nicked round here since December 1st!

I don't think you are to bad a deal Lee my mate pays 200 quid a mponth for a 18 feet square unit. and doesn't have the luxury of using it as an opreating centre

my storage is split into 2 areas the operating center and log/chip dump is on a farm , my soon to be kit storage container is a mile from the farm and on a small industrial area, both places are less than a mile from my door..

Your right Matt its time I get my trailers insured and £30 is bugger all

I bought a field out in the sticks. I rent most of it out to a horsey type, so it's paying for itself - it's literally costing me nothing. I've kept a quarter acre for myself for storage of woodchip and logs and as it's a couple of miles from any houses there's never been a problem having the occassional burn up. As for storage of my gear, I've got a double garage at home and a brand new 20' shipping container at the field (which cost me £1000). The shipping container has got built in locks plus a lock box on the door for a padlock. It really would take some seriously noisy equipment and a lot of time and effort to break in to it. Having said that my most expensive gear is at home in my garage with my truck parked in front of the door! So in answer to your question I pay nothing for storing my equipment or my logs and woodchip - and actually the land I bought is probably worth twice what I paid for it 5 years ago.:proud:

Just a tip on shipping containers, a gas axe (oxy acetalyne) is very quiet, and I can gas a container open in about 30 seconds. (this is the voice of experience. )

The way to prevent this is to have a lock box made out of stainless or boiler plate, as this would take about 1/2 an hour to gas through. Use a good quality padlock, as a cheap one can be melted in seconds.
