Just seen the weather in Lancashire and Cumbria looks a nightmare

its useless putting oak on rough high land, they will never come to anything other than big bushes, plant dense spruce to soak up the rain and provide timber and jobs for the future. clear fell after 35 years so the trees don't get too tall and replant, if need be plant hardwoods around the edges to keep the 'greens' happy.

Not useless if it's part of a mix.

Any trees planted has to be better than just have sheep manicuring the grass....

Jon. I never hear of flooding in the Tyne valley leading into Newcastle and the north sea. why? Because Europe's largest man made forest kielder soakes up all the rainfall no problem. the proof is there for all to see.

Why put oaks when spruce will do a far better job. a 60ft spruce will hold a lot more water than a 20ft oak.

Ok jon. you should know your geography. a long range of peaty hillsides known as the 'roof of britain' the Peninnes,perfect for growing spruce are quite close to Leeds and Manchester.

Hi LUFT I think they will be knocking house is dying to put all these trees up when you google Leeds Manchester you don't see no greenery all you see is tarmac and concrete all the best with it at their stay safe John
